01 Evinrude Power Tilt/Trim
« on: April 20, 2015, 03:02:15 PM »
So my port motor decided a couple of weeks ago to lift so I could rest it on the trailering bracket which it did, and then decided to go on vacation.  Would activate the motor for down, but not up.  So, order new solenoids and replaced the "up" solenoid yesterday and whadaya know, up it goes, I pull the trailering bracket so I can change lower unit oil and the "up" goes on vacation again. Let's try a new solenoid, luckily I purchased more than one, nope, still no clicking from the up switch, but down still works. Open the manual release valve, put a strap on the motor and lift it up with the skid loader, rest it on the bracket, go wire a few lights, separate out some steer from the herd (sorry, that's another story) and come back and the motor goes up! Great, let it down, that's right, won't go back up. Checked all fuses, etc.  So, any suggestions? Obviously electric somewhere in the motor because neither at the helm nor on the side of motor does "up" work when it quits. Checked fluid, just at the right level.

I sounds like a wiring issue maybe where the wires enter the relay block?  I'd make sure the connections are clean and tight there.
Does wiggling the wires as they enter the T&T motor do anything while the sw is activated?

I did try wiggling wires but not enough to say I tried in all locations or very thoroughly. I'll try that next weekend.

Thunder,
I tend to agree with Rick, seems very random like a bad connection. The system is fairly simple how it works. The up and down solenoids simply reverse the polarity to the trim motor so up is clockwise rotation, down is counterclockwise using a common 12 volt positive feed to each solenoid. If neither the cowl switch or helm switch works going up or down, try reversing the blue (up) wire and the green (down) wire that come from the trim motor at the harness connection. Blue to green and green to blue. Now depress either up or down on the trim switches and see if the trim works. Down will become up and up will become down. This will remove the trim motor as a route cause since it will work if you manipulate the polarity. Check both solenoid grounds, on your engine, it may be easier to remove the lower engine pan to gain access to all the harness connections that are stuffed down in there and go through each one, disconnect, clean the males with a brass brush and reconnect with dielectric grease on the connection points.  This should be a simple fix, just have to find the connection issue.

Thanks for the help, I'll start my quest next Saturday.  Along with figuring out how to get my big behind in the transom door to figure out why my oil tanks are leaking. I sure hope I get to go fishing on this thing soon. :-)

Replace both trim relays.  If motor works all the time in one direction it is good, will work in the other direction when polarity is reversed.
