Outboards are on their way!
« on: November 08, 2013, 10:33:23 AM »
As some of you know, I purchased a pair of outboards.
Lewis was again, very instrumental in me getting these.
I want to thank Lewis for all his hard work.
Lewis went down and "checked them out".
We were able to strike and Lewis went down there again and did the packaging.
Thanks Lewis, I could not have got these without your help.

The shipper (who I found through U ship) is picking them up today.
I would like to attempt  for myself and one of my workers to install this pair on my Osprey.
I think it would be good to get a understanding of how this goes and works.

I would like to know if there is a book or a site that explains installation of a pair of outboards.
I do realize  this is a large undertaking especially for me,  I do not know a lot about this matter.

My worker, who came from Vera Cruz was a boat mechanic, I believe we might be able to do this.
I am not looking to save money, just would like to be able to say "we did the installation".
I would also gain a better understanding of the boat systems.

If it seems like we are in over our heads, I will have my boat mechanic do it.
We might need to have them installed anyway, we are buried at my company, till late spring.

As always all information and or opinions are welcomed, good or bad.

Thanks in advanced for the input, I appreciate it.

Bryan

I think you will be fine.  I was talking to SeaBob recently about converting to twins on my 245 Explorer.  Keep in mind the single engine 245 transom had a 2" drop cut into them.  So to install twins I think you may have to fill in or bridge that cutout.  I'm interested to see the progress on your install in case I decide to convert to twins in the future.  Take lots of pics!  :D

Bryan, I'd be happy to walk you through it, from picking the first one up, to buttoning up the second.  It's not a difficult task, but there are several things you can do to make it easier, as well as not as time consuming.  At Stamas, I hung and rigged all the O/Bs when our engine guy quit (plus wiring all the cabins), I was a busy boy, and we did nothing BUT twins.  So I'd say I have it down about as "pat" as it can be.

Bruce is absolutely correct in regards to the cut out on top of the transom cap.  I can't say for certain because we never did see where the mounting holes in a twin configuration would land with the top of the cap cut out (for a single), but I would guess that the inboard top mounting hole of each motor would not land on glass...

Bryan, great news, looking forward to the install!

Bob, out of curiosity, what is the distance between the engines?

Thanks guys, Bob, I really would appreciate the walk through, thanks for the offer.
I may be too busy, I sure would like to give it a go, I think I could do better than some shops I have seen.
I will need to remove my Yamaha first.
I am thinking I will do that and see how it goes.
I know there is an art to this like other professions.
I really would like to give it a go.
With the other upgrades we have done they came out fairly well.
I think we could do this, time permitting.
I would really like to do a photo build on them, I think a lot of us here could benefit from it.

Thanks

Bryan

Removal of the OX66 is easy...

Step 1)  Remove the batt cables from their attachment points, 12mm socket.

Step 2) With the cowling removed, peel back the gasket that seats the cowling on the lower pan.

Step 3)  With a 10mm socket and extension, remove the filler piece from the lower cowling where the
rigging enters the lower pan.  Remove the L-shaped bracket that secures the rigging grommet.

Step 4)  Remove the shift and throttle cables from the linkages.  Re-insert the cotter pins so they
            don't get lost.

Step 5)  Unplug the main engine harness, the "tach" harness (2 kind of clear plugs), and the oil tank
            harness (blue plug).

Step 6)  Unplug the fuel, oil, and speedo hoses from their respective barbed fittings.  If you have a
water pressure hose, remove it from the fitting on top of either the starboard (usual spot)
            or port cylinder head.

Now you have de-rigged an OX66.  Snake the fuel and oil lines under the PH back over to the starboard side, lift the rigging hose and all the rigging up and out of the way, drape it over the transom.

Yamahas have (2) lifting eyes, so you will need about a 3' length of 3/8" chain, with either hooks or shackles at both ends.  Secure the chain and lift the motor until the chain is taut.  Remove the engine mounting bolts, pick up the engine with your lifting device, and lay it down on a pallet.

There.  You're done...

You make it sound so easy.
I have a guy who is chomping at the bit to buy my Yamaha.
He left a check on my door about 2 weeks ago, asks me almost everyday if I deposited it yet.
I keep telling him I am not sure I am a seller at this point.
He says hold onto the check, that he is first in line.
I am fine selling it to him, when it is for sale.
I really do not want to sell her at this time, I want to get a feel for the Evenrudes.
I would like to go through Spring with the "new" motors just to be safe.
Do I sound over cautious ?

Easy answer...

NO!!!!! :salut:

Bird in the hand is worth everything! You know the history, maintenance, everything.  Until the new motors make you comfortable if you don't need to get rid of the OX66 and it owes you nothing, and you have the space, hang onto it..  Good well maintained motors will always fetch what they are worth..

I hear you Dave.
We have an old Lexus RX 300,  90 some thousand miles.
Car is like new, not one issue at all.
It has had more than needed maintenance since day one.
I bought it for my wife, new.

She drove it to about 85,000 and loved it. My middle daughter drives it to school and around town,
she loves it.
I must have had 50, no kidding, notes on the windshield with offers to buy it.
Some were really solid offers, more than I thought it was worth.

However, my wife likes it, my daughter drives it and so, what would I replace it with for like money?
Nothing out there, that is how I feel about my Yamaha, if I needed a motor.
I could never find one like this for the price.

I know the Yamaha's history, I have all the original purchase information.
I have all the receipts for repairs or maintenance.
I have upgraded the binnacle and gauges.
It just does not feel right to let her go.

I have a storage garage, She could go in there for a bit.
I think I would feel better knowing I had a backup plan.
In boats you prepare for the worst but hope for the best.
Good advice I would say.
