Steering and Throttel controls
« on: March 21, 2006, 05:25:02 PM »
Need help on replacing throttel controls on a 76 i/o electric shift. Can you use new style controls with electric shift omc. Steering housing under console keeps moving when you turn wheel. Is this because cable might be frozen. Can't find any info on these subjects.Thought maybe some of you old salts might know something. Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about your electric shift problem.

I can speak about your steering issue.  Where the cable passes through the motor's cross tube is probably where your issue is.  More than likely the cross tube is rusted and has siezed on the steering cable extension.  This is going to be a chronic re occuring problem unless you keep after greasing the steering cable there.  There were stainless steel crosstubes available which greatly help this problem.  Ultimately, if you can afford it, go with hydraulic steering to elminate this problem, but not the Teleflex "Baystar" model, because this still uses the cross tube.

The bad news is if your wheel is spinning it's probably because the gears in the helm may be stripped out.  You might be able to fix this, but for what a new helm sells for, I really wouldn't chance it.

Keep an eye on eBay... likely you can find a "new" old system to replace the OMC one you have if yours can't be repaired.

Steering is a Teleflex system.  The cable's probably corroded.  New replacement cables are available.  If it's the steering box that's frozen that can be replaced too.  Take a look in the Teleflex site to find the match for the unit you have.
