Safety on throttle
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:56:00 PM »
Hope someone knows where I can pick one of these up.

I have a 1999 245 explorer and on the OMC throttle there is a safety snap that goes into/around the circular snap so the key ignition can start the engine.  The snap had a red cord on it that one could fasten to your clothing.

Does anyone know how to find another one?  Or possible disconnect this part of the throttle so I can start the boat?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

you can start/run the outboard if there is no snap on the saftey switch if its one of the key switches with the built in kill switch thing...

the one I have actually goes under a colar that is around were the key goes in and lifts the igintion so that the key will not push in.  It basically raises the ignition switch.  Its like 3/4" thick and goes around and snaps in place.

thank you for the advice, I did try that.  the only one they had was the standard one that everyone is used to.  The one I am talking about is rare.  It actually said OMC on it, and only worked with the throttle configuration at the helm.  It is not like the one used on outboards or waverunners.

Thanks thou,

Irish,
Was yours the one that had a semi-circular clip on the bottom side with a "tab" on the top side that depressed a button on the kill switch when attached?

Scott,
A kill switch works by applying a ground to the engines coils.  Ground from the ignition switch on one side, ground back through the engine harness on the other.  With the lanyard in place, the circuit is open, pull the lanyard, circuit closes, effectively grounding the coils.  Check to make sure you have a good ground coming from the ign switch, check to make sure you have continuity between the lead off the other side of the switch and the engine (it is one big ground, after all), then see if you have continuity between the 2 leads with the lanyard pulled...
