245 explorer steering

So I’ve had very stiff steering on my 245 explorer with twin 150 optimax since I got the boat 2 years ago. I’ve finally had enough of it. I’m a bigger guy and steering the boat is HARD. I’ve done a bunch of trouble shooting and the issue has to be from the ram to the helm. I’m almost positive it’s the 20 year old splashwell ram. I was going to replace the single splashwell ram with a front steering BUT on the 245 explorer the splashwell is in the way it LOOKS. what would be my options with the splashwell ram? Do they make a front steering for this boat or do I have to stick with the splashwell single ram?

Your system is cable? Change it over to hydraulic  such as seastar

It is hydraulic. The ram system is what I’m asking about.

Sorry your talking the cylinder, if you turn the wheel to lock either way, take the hose off the cylinder at the side it’s pushed toward then continue turning in same direction watch if fluid leaks out port on cylinder. If it is it’s bypassing piston seal. If no leaks them probable the helm. Draining some fluid will check for contamination also

Can you tell what color or type fluid is in it? Maybe the weight isn’t correct

Have you disconnected the helm connections from the engines to make sure the engines aren't binding in the swivel brackets to differentiate a mechanical engine issue or a hydraulic steering issue? Is it a Seastar system? If so what is the steering hydraulic cylinder number? Something like 5345?

The engines swing fine disconnected. Ram part number 5380.

Best way to drain system? I screw hoses on ram, but in bucket turn wheel?
