Interesting Aquasport Newspaper Article from 1971

I was searching around on google for information on Fred Coburn and the 22-2 & came upon this newspaper article from the Boca Raton News in 1971.

The one thing I had a question about was that Fred Coburn is still listed as president of Aquasport in the April 8, 1971 article.  Whereas, the "Aquasport the first 10 years- an initial history" thread lists "In 1969, Coburn sells Aquasport (still looking for the name of the new owners)."

I'm just confused as to this inconsistency and wondered if anyone had some insight on this?

Did Coburn sell Aquasport to outside investors & stay on as president for several years after the sale in 1969?  Or was Coburn still the owner(and president) of Aquasport in 1971?

Yowzer!

The city maintained the Aquasport 22-2 Police Boat sank due to a faulty transom plug install by the factory.

Somebody get up with them, maybe we can get a class action suit going for leaky rotten transoms :lol:

Interesting article indeed.  There can be many explanations as to why the boat went to the bottom, when, as advertised, it shouldn't have.  May have been a lack of foam issue.  Remember, it is humans who inject and apply the foam.  Did the stringers get absolutely full?  Was their additional foam that may have been applied in the areas between the hull and the stringers and b/heads that didn't get shot in, or did but not enough of it?  Was the boat properly tested for level flotation using the simulated weight of twin engines and all expected gear?

Keep in mind commercial vessels purchased by government agencies are not subject to the same requirements that NMMA/ABYC (back in those days, BIA) set down.  Yes, typically, they are tougher and better built then their recreational cousins.  Typically, but not always... :shock:

An "un-sinkable" boat can capsize, but still float, just upside down.  Happens when one side of the boat, due to weight imbalances, starts to get lower than the other side when water intrudes the boat.  Once the gunwale goes under, she'll turn turtle in a heartbeat!  But, with the proper foam flotation, she'll still float.  Remember that Everglades with the football players a few years back?  The one hanging on the upside down O/B?  Perfect example.  Boat capsized due to weight imbalance, yet didn't sink.  Unfortunately, it was basically of no use except to one person...

From the way the article reads, if I'm Coburn or Sargent, I'm giving them boys a new boat.  And that boat would be so full of foam, 10 tons of bricks wouldn't sink her!

Sorry, know this is a thread on Coburns position in the company, just had to say a few things...

I know. Sadly the newspaper only has 10 pages scanned. I wish we could see the rest of it. It seems like this article would send out a lot of bad press for aquasport not replacing the boat(especially for a government agency).
