1983 Johnson 175hp transport
« on: September 24, 2012, 07:15:11 PM »
I've had trouble getting this engine going to the point that I went back to my old skiff with a 30hp four stroke to fish the last of the season.  As I get ready to shut down the summer shack, I'm contemplating making this engine a winter project... two issues.

1. My winter residence is 2100 miles away and it would mean transporting the engine in a 4X6 enclosed trailer.  The engine would have to lie on it's side for the trip.  Is this OK for the engine provided I build a suitable cradle for it?
2.  How much of the ignition/throttle/shift harness would I have to take with me if any in order to test/run the engine while I worked on it?

Any input would be great, thanks.

Well Clement, a couple answers to your couple questions...

As far as transport, simply lay the motor down on either side and strap her down...pallet preferably.  Won't hurt a thing.  Now the hard part, running it while you're down here (assuming your winter residence is in sunny FL).  It would be easier to pick up a harness w/key switch off ebay than to de-rig  the motor and pull all that stuff out, as that is what you will need to do.  Newer motors, you can get a test key switch harness that simply plugs into the engine harness, short and sweet, makes bench testing easy.  But an '83?  That would be a stretch...
