PVC pipe in stringers I/O 1979 ff 222
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:45:20 PM »
I cut away the inner transom skin to remove the rotted transom.   Under where the battery boxes were installed on either side of the engine bay, there appears to be 1" PVC pipe running into the stringers, parallel to the transom.

I'd assume they're drains for water that collects in these areas below deck, but there's no outlet into the bilge.

Thoughts?

Pics would help illustrate what you are referring to. I believe they may be the drains from the upper side of the stringer to the bilge? I guess we need to see pics to be sure.

Can't get a pic to load.

The pipes do run down hill from the upper side of each stringer but their is no opening into the bilge.

Looks to me like the drain from the gunwale side of the stringer to the low (bilge area) side.

How is that water getting from gunwale to bilge?   I can't see any openings to where this pipe should go.

You might need to ream it out.  Looks like it slid outboard a bit so when they foamed the stringer, it had no clear passage.
We've had a few members posting this same problem.

There should be an "other end" on the inside of the stringer.  Put some water in there and see if you can tell where it is coming through. They might have glassed over the end, who knows, you do need to open it up. Mine has the same amount of tube on the inside as the outside of stringer. It works a lot better now since I pulled the 30 year old latex glove that had it stopped up for the last 20 years or so.

Here is a pic of mine, backside of starboard transom box on right, inside of transom on left. Drain tube in the step down part of stringer.

I believe this may explain it. Im not sure if this is what your seeing but this is how it is on mine. It is basically there as a precautionary drain assuming that water somehow gets on the gunwale side of the stringer through a rod holder or any other item you may have mounted to the gunwales. It does not drain outside the boat. It is simply to drain water from the high side of the stringer to the bilge area.

If this isn't what you have and if this doesn't answer your question then let us know and we will keep trying to figure it out for you.

Looks just like this.   My unit is an I/O....I wonder why there were no drain holes cut through the engine bay tub where these pipes could have drained directly into the bilge?

Just a guess, but its possible they had to isolate the engine tub from the bilge for environmental reasons such as oil spills, fuel, etc. Its similar reasoning why the gas tank tubs did not drain into the bilge. As most of us know the gas tank tubs filled to the top with water which leaked from the covers rotting the tanks in no time.

Actually the engine tub is the bilge area as the rear bilge pump is located directly below the engine.

Both the cuddy and fuel tank tub have rear drains that flow to the bilge.

I'm going to open those pipes up and install a proper drain through the tub to keep that water from building up on the upper side of the stringers.

Good thinking. When you do...let everything drain below the lower tank deck...i.e. lower bilge.

Some CCPs, FFs, and XFs have the 1" PVC running through the stringers at the aft end.  They were for drainage of water that might collect outboard of the stringers.  No hose connected - they just allow water to run from the outboard area into the center of the bilge.
