Control Cable Length - '86 200 Osprey
« on: April 01, 2013, 01:15:42 PM »
Just wondering if anyone who has finished a late 80's 200 Osprey re-build or control cable replacement could help me out and confirm the correct length for the control cables.  Have a binnacle control mount on the console and all wiring is run through the OEM trough to the right side of the console & seat.  Have an '86 140 Johnson, but doubt that impacts the length.

Would like to order the parts before taking the boat out of storage so I can swap the cables out in a day before hitting the water this spring.

Thanks!
Brian

Brian,

I suspect the reason that you've not received a prompt reply to your question
is because the traditional way, and the BEST way, to get the answer is to your
self measure the length of the cable that is now installed in your boat.

I've done that myself and one "trick" that might be helpful is to use a piece of
rope, cotton clothsline rope is ideal, and carefully string it along the existing old
cable from one end to the other. This is much easier than trying to do the same
with a steel tape measure. Then simply measure your rope. You can use masking
tape to secure your rope at the beginning end and as you proceed so that your
measurement is totally accurate.

The other method, as you've already anticipated, is to remove the old cable and
order the identical length replacement.

I personally would not take any persons advice about what length cable will fit
my boat. You need an EXACT length fit - and nothing else !

Hope this helps

The cables should have the size stamped on them near the end.   Also it doesn't hurt to have them a little long to avoid tight turns and binds.

Nope, a tad longer won't hurt at all, if in doubt always go the next size up.
