It's a good day. Just got off the phone with Phil. My new fuel tank is on the way!!!!

Well I received my shiny new fuel tank today. Thank you Phil at Alloy Metal. So tomorrow I will be attaching some HDPE to the bottom of the tank with some 5200. I will cut the HDPE into 2" strips and attach it. And then hopefully installing the tank back in on Friday. Waiting on some new marine to come in so I can run the wires for the fuel sender and grounding wire. I will upload some boat porn tomorrow!!

Well here are a few pictures of the tank and my mock up of how i plan to add the HDPE to the bottom of the tank. Let me know if you think it should be done different. I also was doing dome refreshing on my splicing, since it is almost time for me to go back to work.

Awesome!! I just got my tank from Phil yesterday. What year is your 170? I'm very confused by the locations of ur pickup, fill, and vent.

It is a 1988. The fill tube is the big one on the right side. The air vent is the smaller one to the left and the suction line has the red cap in it below the fill/vent location. what year is years? post a picture of your tank.

My 170 is a 1976. These are basically the original locations of the fill, vent, pickup and sender. I know what everything is on your tank I was just curious why everything is basically centered on the tank. That's why I asked the year of your 170. Good luck with the install!! I'll be posting my process when I get to it in the spring.

In searching through older posts, I came across a member's tank replacement in a late model 80s 170 and his tank ports are also located basically "on center" so it would appear to be related to model specific years.

Well last night i went to pull my scupper drain tubes so i could replace them. And what i saw wasn't very promising. I drilled a few test holes and sure enough the wood is rotted out. So it looks like i will be doing my transom now. Not sure if i want have it poured or do wood. I do not have a lot of fiberglassing experience. So i am undecided what to do! If i do it with wood, should i do it from in the inside or outside? Decisions decisions decisions!!!!!

A third option would be to go with some type of a composite board.

I had someone come out and look at the boat and give me a quote. I was quoted $1000 and i supply the materials. this includes replacing the transom with wood and replace the soft spot on my floor. Plus i could even come out and look at it while being worked on. How does the price sound? I was also quoted from another person $3600-3900. That was a transom made out of coosa. I thought that was way too much money.

Depends what you want to use as a core - wood is what I used and it wasn't hard to do but way harder than having someone else do it for you.

Yeah i am going to go with wood. i found a place here in Norfolk that has 3/4' marine ply for $97.50 a sheet. Haven't found any place cheaper. I also have a roll of fiberglass here in my garage.I will ask if he can use it. Not sure what it is maybe you guys can help me figure out what it is!!



Maybe you can decipher what this means on the box of fiberglass!!!

Well my goal today was to get the engine removed and get a better look at the transom. Well i accomplished my mission and a transom rebuild is definately going to happen. I am thinking of just doing it myself and saving the $1000   and using that money to buy alot of the supplies i will need. So i will be asking alot of questions and seeking guidance!!!





I have foind 3/4" marine plywood for $97.50 and 3/4" coosa board 4x8 for 213.50. I am thinking coosa!!

Well it has been a while since i have posted on here. But i have been working on the boat. I decided to go ahead and rebuild the transom myself! I hope to get some help along the way. A few pics of the progress!

Well no turning back now! As you can see she was all rotted out!!!
