New Build! Inspiration question.
« on: August 10, 2021, 09:34:44 AM »
Looking to Start a project on a 1970s 17’ Aquasport.  I grew up with the boat and love the hull. Anyway I want to take the hull down to the bare hull/stringers. I want to re-design the upper mold/deck.  I’d like to extend the gunnel all the way around so you can walk/sit on it. The deck will be completely flat with no raised upper deck. The motor will be a 90hp tiller steer and above gas tank where center council is will be a live well and a dry storage compartment.

Trying to find some Threads of some similar builds. New to site, went through a bunch but figured I’d ask about maybe some past builds.

Thanks

Nick

Keep in mind or if you weren’t aware, the ‘70s 170 is very weight sensitive a stern.  I’d expect porpoise issues unless you’re considering a 4-5ft tiller extension to position you further aft and stowing the fuel tank aft.  Trim tabs resolves that issue, except you won’t have a console to mount the tab controls.  What I’m getting at is….standing stern along with stowing fuel tank at stern will likely present hull performance issues.

Thanks for info! I had a 1972 hull through out my childhood. We had a 90hp for few years then got a 115 Johnson that That had more power than the stock engine. But I never had any porpoising problems.. even at full throttle trimmed way up, no trim tabs. We had a 20gallon tank that was under the C.C. That was naturally empty all the time. Could only afford 5 gallons every time I went out.  She was pretty fast by myself going into chop!  Is it certain years in tbe 70s?

There is a rebuild going on right now where the member popped out the liner. Here it is - https://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=15758.msg153328#msg153328
If you're going to use a tiller I would move everything that has weight forward to the area where the CC used to be. Batteries, fuel tank, plus your baitwell - that should help offset the weight in the back. As mentioned, the 170 has only a 6'10" beam. I can steer mine just by moving my body weight port or starboard of the console, without any touch of the steering. If you stand on the top of the gunwale it will certainly dip down into the water a good bit. I'm interested in the design you have planned and the outcomes - if there are problems, we can solve them then.
