Ooops... Ran my battery charger while the batt switch was ON
« on: March 12, 2011, 06:11:25 PM »
Dufus, here.

Despite the warning labels, I plugged in my on-board charger today, not realizing the battery switch was turned ON for Batt #1.  After about 2 hours I realized it, switched it to OFF, and instantly my charger's "Batteries Ready" light came on.

Did I screw up anything?  I tried the VHF and Lowrance, both seemed fine. The ignition switch was turned off during this time.

Thanks guys.

No fuses blew?  I'm sure someone will tell you that there may be something that could go wrong, but most likely you're fine.

I doubt you hurt anything.  I think the biggest no no would be trying to start the engine with it hooked up.

same here, start the boat with the O/B charger plugged in, I leave the battery switch on all the time, so the stereo keeps it's memory.  Never heard of a warning against that?

ive done the same all the time, even left the livewell pumps runnin to keep the bait alive overnight while the boats in the water... the only thing ive noticed is if the charger is plugged in, and you have a am/fm radio on it messes with the signal causes some static...

Well, I shall write ProMariner and tell them to rewrite their literature!  As you guys said, I had no problems.

Fired her up today, went about 13 miles offshore, and bagged some sheepshead and snapper- both on the surface and at the bottom at 60' deep!   :D  Nice day, it was!  :thumright:

Snapper??? I went out yesterday too, everything I caught I had to throw back for the Porpoise to eat, then did a survey with the FWC folks at the boat ramp, they are doing an economic survey to study how much rec fishing is contributing to FLs economy, and how stupid some of these reg are.  Hopefully something will change in the next year or so.

Seems to me that charging a battery via a charger with the switch on would be no different than running the engine with the switch on.  Wonder why someone would advise otherwise?  Maybe the charger would be chargine at a higher amperage and could overload some electronics

Yep, I think it was a mangrove snapper, about 16".  We threw him back, as I wasn't entirely sure about him.

I did one of those surveys with FWC people last fall.  My friend was all nervous when they approached us at the dock, thinking they were about to measure all his fish, but they were just taking surveys.
