1998 Throttle Control
« on: June 02, 2010, 10:49:23 PM »

Can anyone tell me if this is an original throttle for a 98 Tournament Master 245? What is the button on the top for(little square)?Has anyone ever changed these for something else.My neutral position is almost in reverse. Is there an adjustment or just replace. What replacement would you use.

Thanks

Mark,
The square button is the "Throttle Only" button.  Push and hold while moving the lever forward, this disengages the shift butterfly in the binnacle, so you can rev your motor without it being in gear.

Now, about your reverse position.  Pull the cowling off.  Look at the starboard side of the powerhead where your shift and throttle cables attach.  Remove the retainer that holds them in place.  Remove the circlip that retains the shift cable to the shift slide.  Make sure the shifter is in the neutral position.  Place the adjustable thumb wheel back in it's slot on the motor and see if the mounting hole lines up with with the stud on the shift slide.  If not, adjust in or out to align it.  Re-install the shift cable and the retainer, and you should be good to go.

If your cables have stretched, than it's time for new ones. I get mine from Boatersland, they have good prices and have always done me right...

Better known as a "detent", it works just like Bob stated.

That's a typical mid 90s OMC/JohnnyRude binnacle control. They work pretty good really.
That one looks in excellent shape.

Bob,
When we were running full-tilt, we did more OMC installs than all the OMC boat companies COMBINED!  I did so many, I could pull that bitch out of the helm, rig it, and reinstall in about 1 1/2 minutes...no, we didn't thru-bolt them...
