what would a 75 hp on a 19-6 do?

I have an opportunity to get an optimax 75 pretty cheap and like the idea of great gas mileage.  From what I can figure it should top out around 30-33 mph based on other boats of the same weight and hull type.  I usually only run about 20 mph with my 115 so top end is not a big deal.

I know all the comments about going bigger, but a similar size Privateer only takes 40 hp to plane so I am sure the 75 would work?

What do you all think?

I think it would pretty underpowered.  The 175's are generally equipped with a 90, with a 115 or 120 being prefered.  The 19.6 is bigger and, heavier.  While it may be true that you won't always want or need the power, when you gotta have it, like manuevering around a storm, it's priceless.  Not to mention, the 75 is going to be worked pretty hard, which is going to eat fuel and reduce the life of the engine.  If I had a 19.6, I'd consider going with twin 60's or, 50's.  You can crawl if you want or, not.  Plus the life on those smaller engines is amazing.

I'm sure it'll work, but under-powered.  I've seen a 70 hp on 222s (rentals at a marina).

I run a 1984 75hp Mercury on my 170 Osprey and it tops out at 30mph. If I were to repower I would like a 90hp but a 75hp siutes fine for fishing and watersports.

I went with a 125 on my 222 for the same reason as you mention. I got it new for 1/2 price. This season I added a hydrofoil and couldn't be happier (with this setup).  My experience has been better fuel economy, jumps onto a plane quicker and seems to have helped but not cured stabilization. Cost me $50 and one hour to install.

Just my $.02
