1970 Flatback removing liner/decks in ONE piece?
« on: December 27, 2022, 08:59:18 AM »
Has anyone ever pulled the liner and main deck/casting deck as ONE piece in a 222 flatback (pre 72). Most leave the side liner and sometimes even the casting deck and cap in place but I am thinking of taking it apart in the reverse way it was installed. The deck is solid but want to inspect the stringers and likely replace the foam. This will give me a way to keep the deck to liner joints original and make repairs accordingly along with replacing the transom and keeping it fairly close to original. It’s a barn find 1979 hull that has been sitting since about 1986.

I recall at least one member that removed the cap, liner and deck. Believe he used a old swing set (or made) a hoisting frame. I'm not sure it was a flatback hull though. Can't seem to locate that thread.

Not really what you're looking for here.

Thanks for the reference Capt. Bob. I do remember reading through that one when it was active. I think my biggest struggle would be getting the liner that's wrapped on the inside of the transom core. I was thinking if I use leverage from the casting deck and run 2xs across from liner to liner, i might be able to spread the load across the liner in a box form structure to rip if off the concrete putty that's on top of the stringers.

Yeah, I remember that as a particularly painful part of this site's growing pains.

Yup, it turns out a factory original flatback 222 liner will pop out in one piece! Woohoo! See below to close this one out.  :danceSm:

The most important task to complete this is building a box structure using the side liner and decks as a box beam structure to provide leverage against the bonding putty that is attaching the bottom laminate of the decks to the tops of the stringers. I could have done a much better job of building this but it was just some old material I had around the yard. See respective rebuild thread here for more information....
