246 Family Fishermen transom and splashwell modification
« on: October 25, 2016, 08:05:59 PM »
Well my brother Luke picked up a 246Family Fishermen for $900 including an aluminum trailer back in May and we FINALLY got time to do some work on it Sunday. The plan is to remove the hump from the splashwell and replace the rotten wood in the transom with 1 1/2" 26# coosa and add a floatation bracket to hang his 225 Suzuki four stroke off of.
After much deliberation of where to cut and why I started by laying out our cut marks on the splashwell in sharpie. We decided to cut the whole thing out in one piece to save on fairing and sanding when it goes back together.
I let Luke throw on the half face respirator and the sleeves since this is his first endeavor into any sort of rebuild. Cuts were made across the top of the splashwell and over the gunnels and across the top of the transom skin. The transom skin top had to be removed by a third parallel cut as it was BADLY cracked and deteriorated. We then pried the skin away from the rotten transom core and once we got it going in the right direction we hooked up our engine stand through the access hatches in the transom and started to lift up prying chiseling and applying more pressure each time the splashwell moved a little. Took a few cycles of prying lifting and chiseling until it FINALLY popped up and out in one FABULOUS piece.

You've done the hard part.  Here's the instructions on how to do the easy part.

Uh Levi - I don't think that is a Family Fisherman.   :scrHead:  I think you may have a Sea Hunter.   :08:  How about another pic or two?

FINALLY got a free minute 7-12's SUCKS!!!
so here we are before the cuts transom was swollen and the PO had bolted a stainless steel plate to the transom for extra support.

Here I drew lines for luke to cut on ;

Here's luke with his proper PPE cutting the back of the splashwell loose from the transom skin:

We started with a single cut next to the transom skin but the top part of the transom was toast and cracked all to hell when we pried on it so we made another cut where the top rolls over into the splashwell removed the top of the transom and pried downward from there :

Had to dig out the putty stuff seen in the previous pic from between the skins to get  pry-bar in there to break the splashwell loose from the transom:

We ran a strap through the access pie covers and hooked both ends to our engine hoist
and kept adding constant upward pressure as we pried the splashwell from the inner transom skin:

Here's the whole splashwell hanging off the engine hoist and in our garage:

Heres the transom splashwell removed and ready for transom core removal:

We bailed out of work early last week and got a full sheet of Coosa Bluewater 26 at fiberglass Florida and we're taking tomorrow off to run up to fiberglass supply and Raka for resin, glass plascore and a sheet of pvc board and hopefully will get the old core dug out as well. Luke will only need a half sheet of Coosa so we split the cost of a full sheet and I'll end up using the other half on my 1969 222 Coburn and Sargent flatback that I'll FINALLY have time to start after a year of sitting.
I'm looking for guidance on what to glue the transom core in and I've been back and fourth between thickened epoxy, polysilk, and a few other options.
Any preferences/suggestions previous experience?

Nice job  :thumleft:
I would go with thickened epoxy about peanut butter thick and trowel it (1/4" notch) onto the fresh glass of the transom. Then clamp it it.

What should I thicken it with Rick cabosil? Micro balloons? A mixture of them? We're headed to Raka this morning and Mike's got whatever I want or think of...

You want to use cabosil for glueing in transom core.  Mix it to about a mayonnaise consistency.

For filets, I like cabosil, wood flour and chopped glass strand in about equal proportions.  Mix to about peanut butter consistency and glass over before it hardens completly.  You don't want to sand this stuff.

The micro balloons are for fairing because they make a sand able mix, but it offers little strength.

So I decided to get the three gallon kit of Raka epoxy and the cabosil from Raka after talking to Mike this afternoon. He said to run two layers of 17 ounce biaxial against the existing exterior skin then mix up a batch of thickened epoxy ( drywall mud consistency) and trowl that onto the new glass and clamp in the core. Mike said the cabosil would add stiffness and the epoxy would be the best bond. He also said to lay another 3 to 4  layers of 17 ounce on the inside of the core and if possible to lay the inner skin on the core in all up in one shot so that I have one solid chunk of glass and epoxy. Does four layer sound excessive?
