Registration without HIN 79222
« on: July 04, 2014, 08:39:57 PM »
Hello everyone,

I posted a couple last year on a 79 22-2 I acquired for free from a friend.  I put a 470 in it that did not have spark.  I worked out all the kinks out with the motor and it runs perfect!!!  I am getting ready to register it and throw it in the water.  So heres the dilemma.... the guy I got the boat from got the boat from a guy who bought it from a guy for the trailer only.  So I guess im the 3rd person from the originally registered owner.  I bought the 470 and a trailer from another guy who sold it to me in a galaxy I did not want.  Junked the galaxy kept trailer, 470 and alpha one to use in the 222.  Have the papers for the galaxy, and the title for the sea lion trailer.  The guy I bought them from refused to sign a bill of sale.  Now the HIN on the aquasport is almost impossible to read but may say ASPD22IN79F.  The CT DMV wants bill of sale from last registered owner, a person I will never be able to find.  The last time it was in the water was 2007 according to the registration stickers on the hull. Is there anything I can do to register this boat? Does this sound like the right HIN?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I have countless dollars and hours invested in the boat and it looks great.  The blues and striped bass are running around here and it would be nice to land one in this awesome vessel.

Hopefully the soon to splash "Morgan Joy"

Thanks guys

If I remember correctly, you're up north (New York  ).

Hopefully members in that area will chime in.

The HIN seems about right.

Good luck.

Connecticut , nice memory though. Im a mile from the mouth of the Thames river which gives access to the long island sound which for some reason I think about ALL the time!

Basically the boat was abandoned, and was sitting on a trailer you purchased. Two ways to approach it. Call the state and find out to whom it was last registered, and if there is any contact info. If you are fortunate you'll find someone in that office who will take a personal interest in your dilemma, and renew the old registration and numbers in your name. Asking to speak to the supervisor is a plus if they're of no help.

The second method is to claim salvage rights, and a new registration/new numbers issued. This will be more involved, but every state allows it. Surprising that CT DOT handles boat registrations. Most states it is the Dept. of Natural Resources/Wildlife/Fisheries.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Hopefully you'll get to speak with a nice lady. Address her as your grandma.... be nice, cordial and engaging from the start. Ask how her Fourth weekend was, etc. Make friends.

You are hoping she can help with this problem, you don't know what to do, how to approach it, etc.....you really need HER professional input and expertise.

Sales are sales, from cars to camels.  Sell yourself, then the product. In this instance you are trying to convince her to buy you and the dilemma :salut:

The next observation is  applicable to anyone needing  expert advice. Government assistance, household problems, plumbing, electrical, landscaping, engineering, medicine, auto repair, tires, boats, dental, clothing...anything.

Always ask the professional at the end of the discussion "If you were me, what would you do?" It is a genuine, sincere question...and the simplest form of flattery. You've come to them in friendship asking for help. You are attempting to break the wall of customer/patient and  humanize the conversation. If they are reputable...you will ALWAYS receive a heartfelt, genuine answer.

If folks asked me that every day....they would save themselves unnecessary concern and money.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks! Registration took forever, got the HIN and spoke to the last registered owner who was happy to hear she was going back in the water. Apparently he had the same motor I put in it and blew head gasket and was going to repower but never got to it. I posted somewhere else that I get 35 mph WOT and cruises nice at 22-24 mph. Thanks again guys for all your help!

I know that is a huge relief!!!  I almost had the same dilemma when I registered mine three years ago. I got lucky when the guy I had bought it from had kept a bill of sale from the guy he bought it from. I agree with gran that is a nice looking boat. Next time you're out try to get a video of how it rides with your I/O. Now that I've been around rhojo's I'd like to see if there are any differences.
