Flip the arm and move the end to the hole closer forward?  That might work, but would need to see the interaction with the cylinder...

That is what I will try next time I get out to her.  I will see if I can take a video.

Thank you Guys !

If I were thinking about swapping out the old junk to a new steering unit... what way (product/brand)should I go with and, where do you think the bext place to purchase currently would be?

The majority of the boating world would automatically say Teleflex Seastar...but, UFlex makes a really slick system (the baby Vrods, 150-200 inline 4s) use it.  UFlex also builds the I6 Verado system, so they've been tested.  The cylinder is compatable with existing 2-line Teleflex and Morse helms.

If your helm is not giving you any problems, then just swap out the cylinder, save some bucks.  The helm pump is the expensive part of the whole thing.

But, seeing as Seastar is by far the most popular, here's a link where you can download the Seastar install manual, it will tell you what cylinder will fit your motor...http://www.theprolineguy.com/teleflex-s ... l-t87.html

Just click on the PDF to download it.  If our fearless leader would set up Classic AS so we could attach files, I'd put it on here...

HC5345 looks like my unit for the make and the year of the engine.  Pricing it out seems to be about 450-500 $ I just have to figure out if this pump/ kit will work for what I have in place now that is salvagable.  It looks like the notes on the particular unit for my model.  Notes:  State there may be a need for extensive cowling modification.

Merc and Teleflex didn't play well together back in those days...

Actually, it's just some minor "notching" of the lower pan to provide clearance.  Trust me, been there, done that...

I am trying to look up this system also but am not have as easy as a time as the other system to try to find it.

Google UFlex Hydraulic Steering...like here...http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/UF-HYDAFTMT.htm

Didn't say they were cheap, but an alternative...

from this angle it looks like that arm and bracket can be machined down just enough to allow clearance,or have the hole welded and redrilled in a bit and shave off enough of the bracket to clear, good luck :salut:

No doubt that the Uflex system is a pricy system after checking that link out Bob ... I will have to do some toe to toe comparisons research on the two systems and see how it pans out.  I don't mind spending some extra $ for a superior product but there has to be a solid benefit for the investment.  I think the helm system is in good shape, a small leak directly under the wheel that I need to address (I have a seal rebuild kit to resolve this) again something I have never done but does not seem too daunting a task.

Pete I was just talking about this sort of option of grinding down the edge of the bracket, with a sailor friend of mine...... though he is a sail man he has a pretty good head on his shoulders so I was contemplating the idea.

You know those blow boaters...They'll argue over a penny and end up with 18 gauge wire...

Have you ever thought of trying to turn that bracket 180 degrees???????? Personally I would have just made a new one. Its only a piece of flat ss. Opps didn't see bob had already sujested that. I should have known that would have crossed his mined first. :thumleft:

Salt,
Actually, in some applications, Teleflex gives instructions on flipping the pivot plate to afford clearance...

I remember when Mercs DFIs came out (the first Optis), I was at Wellcraft/AS at the time, and since Teleflex had their facility in Sarasota, we were the guinea pigs for them fitting a cylinder to that motor...what a cluster eff that was!

Hey Bob being the guinea pig, is never fun. You know the old saying. Bin there done that and didn't like it. Once in the Army and once at the company. After the Army, you would have thought I would have learned. :pale:  :thumright:
