Steering mechanics rubbing housing in 22' Sandpiper
« on: August 08, 2011, 01:17:51 PM »
Hi I have just purchased a 1984 Sandpiper 22 as my first power boat.  I am loving it so far but, I do have an issue.  The boat has a 1984 (with a 1987 powerhead)  Merc 200HP outboard.  The steering brackets are rubbing on the engine housing and hanging up the motor from actually turning.  It will make the turn but it rubs and is actually making a groove in the housing as it finds it's way over the housing.  Has anyone had any issues like this and any advice on how to adjust or correct this issue?  I am new to power boating and I am sure this is probably a simple fix but I do not want to make any costly or dangerous assumptions. I will work on getting pictures of the situation posted here shortly if that may help?

Thank you all in advance for your help !!

hi Whitewater,

A picture would be worth a 1000 words in this case. If I understand the issue, it sounds like the engine mounts are shot. We really need a picture to solve this...

Whitewater,
Do you have hydraulic steering?  Is there a cylinder mounted on the front lower side of the motor with 2 hoses hooked up to it?

Hi Seabob I have seen what you are talking about and yes it is there.  when turning the wheel towards the left the mount raises and clears the mount.  When turning right the same peice seems to drop and the bolts or the bracket itself rubs the motor mounting bracket.

Hi Fitz

I am including a picture of the unit that is the best I have right now.  The boat is an hour away from me at the moment but I do have this one shot that might shed some light.  If you look at teh picture you will see that the lower right hand under the motor housing there is a steel bracket with a tab that has a hole in it.  That bracket and the part that you can not see because of the lines and electrical lines in the way is the part that has the bolts and nuts on it that are rubbing the engine mount bracket.

does this help?

I thank you for the response !!

Earlier Mercs had trouble with the older Teleflex cylinders, due to there inherant proximity to the cylinder.  My good friend at Teleflex can help you.  Contact Marc Adams, madams@teleflex.bc.ca, he'll be able to help...

I sent the pictures to Lewis this morning for him to post. I can't spend the photobucket time at work.

Here you go guys.  I copied the link and removed the "cancel url" from the line... not sure why that was there.

You need to resize these pictures in your photobucket album to be a max of 800 pixels wide as that's as big as this forum allows.  Then choose the "replace the original" option.

You can actually set your photobucket album up to automatically upload your pictures as this size.

Bob/Fritz You guys Rock !  I just thought I would say that before I forget .. I have a tendancy to be slightly absentminded about such things when I get psyched up about a project.

Bob I just emailed you all of the pix I have.  I really am thinking that the PO took this bracket off for something one day and then put it back on facing the wrong direction...................... the rubbing gauging looks new.  Not like something that has been happening for years.  Just my thought .. I could be very very wrong given I know less than nothing ;)
