Bottom paint questions.
« on: March 15, 2007, 04:57:01 PM »
I am researching what I might put on the bottom of my new hull and have pretty much settled on the Petit Vivid as I want the nicest, longest lasting/multi-season, reddest paint I can get on the fresh white hull and whatever I have left over I'll put on the 222 once I give it a good sanding as the Vivid I got for $142-gal. so while it was a good deal, it is double what I pay for the West M. paint I slap on the 222 every year.

What do you all use for bottom paint?  I did a search and there was no thread on it.

Ben,

If you are not going to keep the boat in the water full time - Don't paint the bottom :!:

I have a dock where I will most likely keep the boat on from June of this year until at least September or so so I'll have to paint the bottom.  The 222 will and has been in the water from May=September for the past 20 years now as well and I'll have to sand and repaint the bottom on that this spring as well.

We are getting snow today and tonight, grrrrrrr.

The guy that did the bottom of mine used Petit - vivid, white.  It is a "Hard Ablative" that should last me for a long time since it lives on a trailer.  If the boat was to live in the water I don't think I'd use anything but black because what grows on it is pretty ugly.
Anyway, what he put on looks good too, if you like bottom paint - almost is the same color as the gelcoat.

Before -

After -

I TRIED peel away, it didn't do anything except peel some cash out of my wallet
After much effort, I gave in and took it to a fella that sand blasted it and then put 3 coats on the bottom and 5 on the waterline.

Almost new/used boat owner here and what I've seen and heard is that the soda blasting is the way to go if you have the money.

Once the paint is put on, how long will it last for a boat stored in-water South Jersey
