Replacing Rub Rail

Just thought that I would check here for a few tips on replacing the rub rail. Mine has a few spaces where the rubber is gone. I saw that Taco & iboats sold the rubber. When I take out whats left of the old rubber and clean out the channels should I be spraying something in the tracks to have the new go in smoother or will it just fit in without too much of a problem? the old rubber

Pics of these rubber pieces would help. Mine is one piece welded stainless.

Andy,
Your rub-rail insert is gray, unfortunately, Taco is no longer making the gray insert, it is now only available in black or white.  Here is your insert...http://tacomarine.com/item--1-x-1-2-Fle ... -0303.html

If you want to go with either black or white, I can get you a pretty good deal on it.

To add to Bob’s post. If you really like the gray. You can get the white and spray paint it. But that would mean touching it up once in a while. To paint it. Rustoleum makes a primer and a finish coat of any color you like. It is for plastic, rubber and vinyl. I’ve use it and it works very well. I’ve never had it peal and I’ve painted plastic outside chairs, that sit out side 24/7 365. I’ve also used it on some small vinyl parts in my boat. One point, you have to clean the parts, to get any oil or grease off the parts before painting. But that is really for any thing you paint.

What boat do you have?  I replaced the grey insert on my 205 Osprey a few months ago.  It was in decent shape, but was a little too short and was coming out in the pulpit area.  I kept the grey insert in case someone has a need for it.  So, if you have a shorter boat than the 205, this will work for you.  Otherwise, the white that Seabob can get you looks good IMO.

I got the Black Taco replacement.
Mine was a little weathered, plus the pulpit area was pulling out.
The new Black rub rail looks awesome
I havent installed it yet, doing other items at this time:
New Disc Brake Conversion on the Trailer
New Stereo System
New Hatch Covers for the transom
Installed New Outriggers Taco
Making a New Panel for the Electronics Box (Black)


Once all finished up, I will post up some photos.
Should be finished by the first of the year?

Bryan,

If I could give you one piece of advice from the insert replacement I did a few months ago, it would be to check the length of the new insert against the old insert before you start the install.  I guestimated that I needed about 52' for my 205, so I ordered the 70' insert.  The box and packing slip both said it was a 70' piece.  However, it turns out it was mis-marked, and was really a 50' insert.  I didn't compare lengths first, but I got lucky in that my guestimation was high, and I really only needed a little less than 50'.

Bob is this the same rubrail that I have on the boat right now size wise?

Thanks Bob I guess this is the way I will go since I liked the grey anyway. Just waiting to hear back from Craig. Mine has pieces missing from it so any color any kind will be better than whats there now.

Does the cost of shipping sound like a fair price?  I can't imagine it costing more than 15 or 20 bucks.  Just PM me your address.  I won't be able to ship it out till Friday.  You can send me a check after you get the insert.

As far as the installation, it is pretty easy as long as you have a heat gun to soften the rubber.  I think I found some instructions on the Taco website.  You can also look at my thread that I linked in my post above for some of the basics.
