1991 AS 222 CCP Help
« on: May 03, 2005, 12:43:59 PM »
Hoping for some help with looking at a 1991 222 CCP. Not alot of info on some of the other online forums & was pointed to this site. I split my time between Tampa and Milwaukee. Boat is in WI and I'm looking at it Thursday. Haven't been able to find a value on NADA....goes back to 1990 for that model but not 1991. Looking for a boat that would be good for inshore fishing with the occasional trip offshore in good conditions.

This is a fresh water boat....never seen salt. Does anyone have any tips on things I should be wary of when looking at a boat of this age? Also wondering about the ride & comfort for taking the family around in Tampa Bay.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Help with '91 222 CCP

If you don't find it in NADA, I would check to be sure that it really is a 1991. I think the last year the 22-2 CCP was built was 90 and you are looking at a leftover. That makes sense as Aquasport passed over to Genmar in 1988/89 and shortly after shifted production from Hialeah to Sarasota and introduced a whole new line of boats.

In terms of value, there won't be any significant difference between years in the late 80s.

The 22-2 CCP is a great all-around boat - I have a 1982 and love it. It will take you wherever you want to go. It definitely is not a dry ride, however.

One word of caution, when Aquasport was in its last years as an independent operation, there was some cutting corners as they struggled to keep things together. This probably affected boats built in 1987-88 but have a good look at yours too.

Certainly, however, Aquasports were built to last - the fiberglass was laid up by hand and was significantly thicker than other boats of that era - and miles better than most boats built later.

Things to check for - the gas tanks were made of aluminum and need to be replaced after a while - your nose will tell you whether you have an issue or not. Other than that, lots of Aquasports have water in the foam-filled stringers when they get to a certain age. There is really no way to tell without opening her up but you can guess by how she sits in the water. Also have a look at the transom to be sure it is not rotting out.

For more tips, have a look around the site.

And good luck - hope you find the Aquasport you're dreaming about.

I'm having a similar issue. Just purchased the boat a few months back. My Title says it's a 1991 22'2". It's  a Center Console so I don't know if it's a CCP or an Osprey. As you mentioned I can't find a thing about it online with that length and year. Any help would be great if you found any info. I even called the new Aquasport that just opened in TN about 4 months ago. They said they will do their best to look into it.

OK,
First off, do you have a readable Coast Guard plate on the console? If so, where was it manufactured?

In 1991, hulls were being produced at the Bradenton/Sarasota Wellcraft plant. This "Genmar" hull line did not have a CCP designation. They were known as Osprey or Explorer (Walkaround). You "might" have a leftover 222 hull that was put together and then registered in 1991.

A pic or two would help solve your mystery.

If you want to post a pic when you talk about your boat, which you should, follow the instructions here http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0  - don't attach them - you are limited by file size and guessing what size to make the file will usually reduce the pic too much. Uploading them into your "member gallery" is better for viewing and the system takes whatever size you upload and resizes it to the best size.
Spend a few minutes to absorb the instructions. It's really easy. Remember if using a phone to take pics, to hold the phone horizontal with the lens to the left.
