1986 222 CCP repairs/upgrades

Getting canvas installed today for t-top.  Going with a silver/grey canvas to match the hull.  Figured I would go with a different color.  Hopefully it will look good.  Should have the electronics box back in a few days.  Having it powdercoated white.

Looks like that I will need to remove the gas tank cover and give it a partial recore.  Has one bad area which is behind the pedestal seat and works aft.  Must have missed this during the inspection of the boat  Most of the hatch is solid and should not need a complete recore.  I just plan to remove the bad section and glass a new piece in.  Not a very big area but when I install the leaning post the screws will have to be in that area.  Also, wanted to get a look at the tank.  Looked through the access hatch and from what I saw looks like a great deal of corrosion   I was told that the tank was replaced 7 to 8 years ago so hopefully it is ok.   I will post some pictures when I have them.

Special thanks to my best friend Mike.  Below is a picture of the bracket that he designed and had fabricated at no cost.   Made out of 1/4" stainless and weighs about 50lbs.  I am very fortunate to have a friend like Mike!  We decided not to powdercoat but to buff and shine it up considering it is stainless.  The only eyesore will be the weld but I have an idea for that   Going to pull the motor off again tomorrow and see what we have!

Holy AQUAMAN!!!   Think that will eliminate the flex??? She's ready for the 570 HP outboard now.... Sweet, Nice Job Mike!!!  Personally, I'd paint it, West has that one part polyurethane topside paint, I think that would look good, and it flows pretty nice with brush or roller.  A lot cheaper and faster than the powder coat route??

Good point Marc   If it looks like it will do the job, might just go back and paint it attached to the boat.  As a matter of fact, I have a new can of Interlux Brightside Polyurethane paint that I have never used.  I think that is what you are talking about.  Should be able to make it look nice.  Great suggestion

If you paint it you can also use some filler on the weld - it'll make it look pretty!

Good point Marc   If it looks like it will do the job, might just go back and paint it attached to the boat.  As a matter of fact, I have a new can of Interlux Brightside Polyurethane paint that I have never used.  I think that is what you are talking about.  Should be able to make it look nice.  Great suggestion

So here is the installation on the bracket.  This has eliminated all of the flex on the transom even with my 350lb.  fat butt jumping on the motor.  Still flexes when it is all the way up on travel lock.  But I think that is normal, "if you have a lever big enough you can move the world".  The bracket removed almost the entire bow in the transom, the 4 extra 1/2" stainless bolts pulled it all together.  We sealed the crap out of it, no more water intrusion!  The bracket ended up being 3/16" stainless because thats what my fab shop had in stock, but they uploaded my template into the computer then made a 3D drawing from it and the computer disected it and then cut the pieces with a laser.  Once they were all cut, the pieces were put together in a jig and welded slowly so that the metal would not warp from excessive heat.  The design of the bracket allows the entire weight of the motor to be supported by the bracket rather then the transom mounting points.  The welds look much better in person then in the photos.   Looks great and did the job!

I'm pretty happy with the results, I hope JD is as well.  Again, all the movement when running the tilt/trim motor up and down is gone, I jumped on the motor when it was down and no movement in the transom.

And to top it off, it almost looks like it belongs there!  turned out to be a clean install.  And, we had time to take care of a few other things on the boat JD wanted to get done.  All in all, great day spent with my best friend working on the boat and not working on work.
