Finally got my 222 CCP!

After a year or two of looking, Marc (flounderpounder) found a 222 CCP in Pensacola, FL. for me.  Made the drive down from eastern North Carolina last weekend with my friend Mike to sea trial and pick up.  Special thanks to flounderpounder for making this happen.

Hull is a 1986 with a 1999 Yamaha 200 OX-66.  Motor ran great and looks almost brand new considering the year.  Boat appears to be very solid but just needs cosmetics to get her looking good.  Only concern was and is the transom.  This was already in my budget.  The transom shows no visible exterior signs at all of interior rot, stress, etc, but does have maybe 1/4" of flex when the motor goes in and out of gear.   Looking down the transom line it does have a slight outward bow near the center.  Anyway, she might go in for a new transom before the season, or just keep running her until I see obvious problems.

Canvas was shot when I bought her.  We tried to trailer it for a little but it started coming apart so we stopped and I cut it off.

Talked to Scott about your concave/convex issue yesterday.  Thinking about it more, the flexing when initial torque is applied tells me the transom is not secured to the stringers and knees, if they are there.  You know as well as I that the transom should not flex, regardless of the engine loads placed upon it.  When you tilt the motor full up and really jump on the skeg, what do you see?

Nice find! Your transom is doing the same thing mine was dong when I got it. Mine was a piece of 3/4 and a piece of 1/2 laminated together for 1-1/4" thickness. You may recall I closed in my transom and used 1-1/2" coosa bluewater board working from the inside. If you use the coosa board you will save about 40#s or the weight will be about the same (as stock) closed in transom. I love the bracket on mine, the ride is much improved as is the handling. My 222 is the only boat I have had with no desire what so ever to sell after almost 6 years of ownership. Most boats I get sell after 2 years, this one just gets another upgrade or two.

Thanks.  Our CCP'S did not have the thickest transom that is for sure.  It appears most of the water intrusion is from the stainless steel cap on the transom.  Several screws are missing.  I took the time to look very carefully at the transom where it meets the stringers.  No signs of any kind of delamination, cracking, etc.  From what I saw and several others at the sea trial, the flex was coming from the top area of the transom not the bottom.

I would love to close in the transom eventually but I don't feel like it is bad enough for a complete transom job right now.  My plan is to get the motor pulled off, seal all holes with 5200, and install a 1/4" stainless steel plate on the inside of the transom.  I am thinking that the plate will give it additional strength and will take most if not all of the minor flexing out.  It will be 44" wide and 5" tall.  This will span most of the inside of the transom and give it additional strength.  The plate will tie in with the top motor mount bolts where most of the stress is.  I am confident that this will work and may actually hold up for many years.  If it doesn't, transom will be replaced.

door's always open, but considering the weather window you jumped through that weekend, it all worked out.  Wouldn't have wanted to get into the nasty stuff with the new boat in tow...
