Trolling Motor - Hard Wiring???
« on: July 15, 2013, 03:33:02 PM »
Hey Men!

I thought I would put this question here with friends rather than at THT where people are pricks.

A good friend had a TM installed on the forward of his Hewes.  They ran the cables through the anchor hatch which has nipped/rubbed/crimped the wire so bad that it's all exposed wire now.  He is going to have to re-wire all the way back to the batteries and does NOT want to use any quick disconnect.

QUESTION:  Has anyone used any type of through hull water tight fitting?

Bulkhead or deck cable pass through like is used on electronics cables ought to do the trick Wes.  http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st ... eRaQtK1Euc

You should be able to run the wiring and protect it so you don't need a waterproof grommet.  Anchors and anchor chain do not play well with wiring...

I want to do the quick disconnect route when I install the trolling motor on the front of my 170.  That way I can take it off when I need to.  I will be looking for a good system for that later on.

I used the MotorGuide quick release Heavy Duty slide mount on my CCP with a plug for the MinnKota TM.  The MinnKota removable mount seems to work well and is not as big.  Make sure you have plenty of glass backing under where the motor will be mounted and put BIG washers on the underside to ensure stability.  Also think about wiring before you close things up - you need to run that #6 wiring up there early.

All trolling motors will break or need to be serviced at some point
A quick release bracket and plug sure make life easy when its that time
