My '73 170 has the tank on deck occupying the space which, on your boat, is the locker fwd of the console.  My tank is aluminum.  From the various under-deck tank replacement jobs I've been reading about, your tank would be aluminum too.

What indications have you seen that your tank may be bad?

My tank is under my console but above the floor and is aluminum.

Get in touch with Deck Daddy.  He's got pix of his stern boxes posted in the Gallery.  He was talking about maybe making up a mold of his boxes.  I'd like to get a set sometime too.

You WILL know when you have a problem.  You will smell that gas.  I think you have the right Idea, as far as removal goes.

I've heard of lots of people building those baitwells.  should be pretty easy.  Mount them w/ 5200 and screws.

Hey all, Count me in as part of the 17' Aquasport crew.  Got a 1986 170 osprey.

I can smell the gas and seem to get horrible mileage.  Appears to be around 2 miles to the gallon or less!  Is mileage the correct word?  Anyways, I got a feeling my tank needs replacing asap.  Anyone want to help?  I've got just about zero clue on this one.......  Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated!

I must be one of the lucky ones. My fuel tank is below the deck and was replaced just before I bought it. It is a 1972 17'.

Wilson, you are right four SS lag bolts and 5200 holds those boxes on tight as can be. I will crawl up and down them with full dive gear and they do not budge.
One boat at a time.

Welcome to the 170 club Chrome. Sorry to hear about the fuel problem.  My tank is above the floor, so I have no clue how to advise you on this.  I'm sure you'll get the help you need here though.

I have a 73 22.2 with the original in deck tank and, no problems.  Removal shouldn't be impossible.  Take the console out, remove floor pannel, disconnect lines, un-fasten straps and, lift.  Once you have it out, it's possible to figure out where to get a match from.  Mine has a specification label on it.  When you're replacing the tank, I'd reccomend replacing the fill line and, vent line.  Perhaps replace the vent fitting too.  I saw these nifty fuel fills I should have bought at the Dania Marine flea market that have pop up knob, so no more deck key.

On my 22.2 the console does not have to come out to remove the floor pannel.  We have had that pannel out to mount the leaning post.  I think on mine the console would not have to come out for a tank job. I'm just not that familiar with 170's to say for sure.

Tanks were mfg'd by Florida Marine Tanks in Hialeah. Telephone 305 620 9030. They have all original specs. Make a drawing of your tank, and they
will fax back correct engineering drawing for your approval.

Easy job. Remember to replace ALL fuel lines while you are in there.
