140 prop
« on: March 24, 2009, 07:11:02 PM »
I have a 1979 Evinrude 140 HP on a 1979 aquasport 176 family Fisherman, 17.5 ft.Fiberglass its a small cuddy cab. Aquasport says it is a modified V hull. The boat weighs 1550 dry no live well one batt. I will usually run 25-30 gal. fuel. haven't been out in it much, the motor had just been rebuilt when I got so I only did a short test run with out running it to hard. OK heres the ? The motor has a 15X17 prop on it seams a little big, when I checked the hustler prop guide it said I should use something like a 13 3/4 X 17. Any info would be great.

What rpm's are you getting now? 5500 rpm is about ideal for the motor. How does the boat come out of the hole? 15X17 is/was more of a V6 prop. Does the prop look like it fits the lower unit? OMC V4's used small and large (V6) lower units at different times. Can you borrow a 13-3/4X17 from someone?

I am thinking I have a V6 gear box on this motor, was on another forum and was told that. I rechecked the prop and it is a 15x17 part# 391200. Was told it would not fit a V4 gear box. They also said take it out and test run it if I get 4500 rpms leave it on and run it. If I only get 4000 out of change to a 15X15. So I will take it out this weekend and see what it will do.

That motor really needs to see at least 5000 rpm. Closer to 5500 rpm would be better. Lugging these motors puts a hurting on them. I'll pull my 1988 shop manual for the rpm spec later.

Thanks for all the help. OK new news. After using acetone, soap and water to remove paint. The tag on the motor mount reads,
E140?XCE? from what I can gather it is a 1989 140 V4 Extra long shaft with the 15 spline gear case. I checked and it is a 25" and the transom is 25" the Aquasport broacher says its a 20" transom but this one is 25" go figure. After the E140 the best I can make out is either a G or a C but the C would mean counter and that is not the case. After the CE I think it is a C that shouldn't mater. Thats what I get for taking the word of the guy I bought the boat from. And here in GA. they don't track the motors like in some other states(no title's) so I think it will be a lot easier to change out props if needed. But it would be nice to know what RPM's I should be getting be for I take it out and open it up. I ordered a manual but it isn't here yet and the way my luck runs it will probably show up in time for Santa.
Thanks again for all the help guys

Things just keep getting better, after more digging it looks like they made a 25" with a V4 gear case and 15 spline prop shaft, don't know thats why I am here. But after more cleaning of the ID tag it definitely says.
E140CXCE which means counter rotation but when the you put it in forward it turns clockwise. So how do I tell the difference between V4/V6 gear case and what is the gear ratio? Man did I just pick up a can of worms or am I still OK?
Thanks so much for your help
Jim

Don't worry about the counter rotation, it probably had the lower unit changed. My 225 Optimax is the same way. I'll pull my shop manual in a little bit. It's for the 1988 series motor, same thing.

It Has a V6 gear box on it for sure, will this be a problem? What RPM's should I see out of the V4 with a V6 gear box?

After lots of research and a trip to the water. The V6 gear case is not the way to go with a V4 motor.
could hardly keep it on plain. I found a 25" long shaft LU, now waiting on new water pump assy to mount it up. Going to start out with a 13.25X19 prop that should release the beast.

Update,
I have been out of town with my Job from 10 April till last Fri. Put a V4 foot on it and took the boat out Saturday morning and got 61 mph (gps) out of it and it, and it handles great. I think I will paint it this fall and plan on keeping it. Looking forward to a lot of time on the water.

RPM's are 5300 to 5400 she jumps up on plain pretty quick and floats along nice at 30 -35 mph.

Apache, I believe you misread your GPS, that boat cannot possibly be doing 61 MPH with that motor.
