Looking at 19-6 72' Was an I/O now has outboard?
« on: April 19, 2012, 10:17:41 PM »
Hey My name is Trey and I'm new to the forum.  I have really been enjoying all the insight.
I am looking at a 72' 19-6 that the owner said was a I/O model with the full transom and cap.  I would like to know if this model is any different than other 72' models.  Example dead rise, stringer system ect.
The power is a 00' Yamaha 115 injected 4 stroke.w/ mercury paralift. I believe that this will be a good fit, especially for fuel economy.  Has anyone else seen anything like this combination.  I look forward to the input, in addition hopefully becoming a new member of the crew.  ARRGHH! :pirat:

Welcome aboard Trey!

Wow, you have a lot to consider.

The power you have in hand is perfect for that hull. That's the good news.

It is exactly the same hull as an O/B 19-6 in terms of deadrise, beam, length, etc.

Main thing, the hull itself. Is the motor still in? Where is the tank located?  If changing to outboard power, the tank will need to be relocated for balance...and you'll need a new one regardless. The transom was never designed for O/B power...that will need to be rebuilt. If she is an original, unrestored '72...take a look at the rebuild threads here. 95% of 70's boats have shot transoms, waterlogged stringers, and rotted decks. The threads tell sometimes sad stories, but happy endings.

Of all the 70's 19-6's here: only two are totally original, excellent condition. One is a Great Lakes boat. The other is in Indian Rocks Beach, Tampa area. Both are barn finds.

Be prepared to spend a minimum of 10K.

Spend a LOT of time on the rebuild threads here before you make this purchasing decision. That ride isn't going anywhere. $500 should buy it, you can scrap the block and get back some of that.

This is not what you want to hear, I know. I learned the hard way, and if I can save anyone here a nickel by urging caution, I will. The first 22-2 I bought was in good faith...and was screwed by an 80 year old man. It wasn't fun.

Will be unable to follow for a few days, no internet. The boys will guide you well!

Best, and welcome :thumright:

Thanks for the reply  gran398.  I should clear this up.  The I/O was removed and the transom hole covered by 1/4 aluminum plates on each side. (24"X24") and through bolted.  This is also were the yamaha is mounted.  I should have taken pictures but my mind was tring to think of everything else to check out.  He has replaced the floors and the boat is solid.
Thanks

I hope he replaced the core section and glassed over the I/O hole prior to bolting on those plates.

Sounds like this could be a major hack job.  Approach with extreme caution.
