Another transom question
« on: June 01, 2011, 03:21:54 PM »
Been looking through the site for some time now on and off to help with a problem I have.  My problem is the same that a few people have already discussed on the site.....my transom.  It has a crack along the top.  I know this has been discussed before and the idea of redoing the transom with Arjay seems to be the best to really solve the problem long term. Great thread on that I have read a thousand times over trying to figure this out

My problem is 1) time it takes to do (since i would like to use the boat this season) and 2) actual difficulty of the project.  I can say that I am pretty good with my hands but have never done this and don't know realistically how much is involved.

The other option I have been searching is fabricating a metal brace to cover the transom where it is cracked and hold of on the repair until maybe the off season (if it will ever happen...........said I would do it this past off season as well).  I haven't been able to locate any real pics of this approach anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...............M.

ps. tried to post a pic but couldn't figure it out.  Guess i need to do the photo bucket thing.

Hey MartiPop,

Any of us that have an older AS are facing this situation to one degree or another. Since you asked about a fabricated brace/cap, look up jdupree posts and you will see a very nice stainless cap he had fabricated in the last several months. I believe he had a fair amount of transom movement that was eliminated. Cap cracks are common on the older models but it doesnt necessarily mean the transom is bad. Are you getting a lot of movement with your engine tilted up and you push on the gearcase of the engine? Welcome to the club, what model and year AS do you have?

As Fitz stated, here's a pic but the entire thread is well worth reading.

Thanks.  Funny thing is as soon as I finished writing the post i searched again and found the same posting.  That is exactly what I am looking to do......and looks like i will do. Wondering about that stainless steal angle that he has running up the curved edge of the well.  Is that something i can have a fabricator do??  Guess I should discuss that with with one.

As for the boat...from what I can tell it is a Xscape...................maybe??? It is a 19' bowrider so that's why I kinda figured it is the Xscape.  Think its an '86 or something.....will check to confirm.  A friend of mine had it taking up space in his summer house and offered to me.....for FREE....no motor of course.  I don't know much about boats, but a free one is a good one to me....HAHAHAHA.  I will be posting pics as soon as get them uploaded.  I don't have the motor mounted yet since I would like to fix the problem with the transom before I do.  Have a Suzuki DT140 waiting to go on.

Since on the topic, is there a way to identify the boat by the serial number??

Free is a great price! Like anything else; free is simply a delay of payment when your talking about boats! Seabob should help you out once he reads this post. He is our only direct connection to the later history of our boats and he has the best understanding of tracing pedigree through hull VIN`s. I think you are the first Xscape owner to the forum.

What we did for JD's boat was to make a poster board template of exactly what we wanted, then I had my fab shop build it.  We used 3/16" stainless and welded to form the channel section.  then we added 4 thru bolts for additional support.

Marti,

Welcome aboard. The members here can be counted on for sincere advice.

JD's post is directly applicable to your needs. Get the transom as dry as possible before you place the stainless cap.

Best wishes, and again, welcome.

Always great being first but no, in this case you're not. :(

Look something like this?

These are Hialeah built hulls circa 1977. Post the HIN. It will confirm builder and date registered. Not much else.

Thanks to everyone.  I had a similar bracket made up last year by a fabricator buddy. Its a little different from what JD had made but gonna fool around with it maybe and modify it to work.  I may just have another one made more like JD's....really like the way that looks.

Capt. Bob...........I have seen those pics, but my boat looks different.  I may be wrong about it being an Xscape.  I pasted the link to my photobucket album with a few pics.

It's not an Xscape.

At first glance it appeared to be a Family Fisherman (FF) 19-6 but.......

Is the bow open? It appears to have a supported cover in one of your pics.

Windshield opens to allow access forward?

If so, I seen this model before but I can't locate it at present. Circa late 70s. Sport model type. Not too many around, not on this Forum anyways.

If none of the above is true and it has a forward cabin, then it is an FF.

EDIT:1

Well it took me awhile but........

First I found this.

I'll now assume that the hull mentioned in the above link is the same one so....
It is in fact a bow rider. It's a 1981 model. That stated,

Info here indicates that it is a Sport Rider (SR) model. I've seen other photos but the ones I found here are for one converted to a Center Console (CC) at one time during its life.

EDIT: 2
Found pic and thread.

Same boat by the way.

Don't want to jack the thread, but I have a transom question.  Do any of you have experience with Seacast products?  The transom on my 271 is beyond gone.  This product was suggested in lieu of wood.  Looking for options in addition to a stainless cap.

Good eye Capt.  You are right, open bow with the cover you see and walk through window.  I had thought about the FF series, but the open bow throws me off too.  I have done a bit more research and came up with the 222 Sandpiper.  This looks like it, but I really cant say that the boat is that big.  It may be for all I know but I don't think so??????  Gonna put a tape measure to it when I get home today.

Please re-read my last post. I have edited it to reflect what I believe you have and why.

That is not a Sandpiper. Don't believe they made them in 81.

That thing is a bow rider fer sure....  weird.   Must be a sport rider.   The splash well is really small so I would think there wouldn't be much flex in that thing with a good double added to it.
