Just got a 1987 17 ft 170 110 hp
Has som soft spots in floor seems to be in descent shape just what to know how to fix floor and what to look for further further damage and how transom has a 3in crack on one side at top just looking for information on how to fix floor or should look into rebuilding it and the transom
Also la would like to find the rod holders and all parts to put it back original if someone has pics of one complete I think that is all that’s missing
Want to use for catfishing on Ohio river
-
Gotta get some pictures up of the transom crack. Transom issues range from purely cosmetic to the motor is about to fall off. As for the floor, depending on severity, repairs range from a drilling a grid of holes and injecting with epoxy, to cutting out the damaged areas and replacing core to replacing the entire floor. Lots of examples of all three on this website.

Thank you I will get some pictures. I am new to this site and thank you for your help

If you want to post a pic when you talk about your boat, which you should, follow the instructions here http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0 - don't attach them, this is better for viewing.
Spend a few minutes to absorb the instructions. It's really easy.

Just trying to figure this out don’t know if the crack will show up might have to get a different pic it’s on right side of the engine about three or 4 inches long

Admin Edit: I went in and rotated all your pics clockwise. When you take a pic with your phone make sure you hold the phone horizontal with the lens to the left. Also, re-read the instructions I posted above to learn which code to copy/paste into your post.

You'll need to attach a close up pic of crack. Note...big diff btwn spider crack in gel coat and compromised transom.
-
From what I see, the crack appears to be where the liner comes over the top of the transom. This is a normal crack that we see over time on these old hulls. Seal it up with some silicone caulking. With the engine trimmed up, bounce your body weight on the lower unit and watch the transom. As long as you're not seeing the transom flex when you do this, you'll be fine for a while.

You appear to have a "Striper" model which had some extra items added.

Close up of the crack I had caulked it to keep it dry

Some spiderweb cracks in the deck some some of the area in front of the consul and on the sides are soft
-
Is there a place I can get parts to put it back original Striper I would like to fix it up and if it doesn’t need rebuilt right now I would like to fix the soft spots in the floor and eventually redo the whole boat they just feel spongy when you step around the console and I’m about 240
-
I'm not sure just what was included in the Striper package, possibly a tackle box built into the center console and a few other ad-ons. Original parts like the bow rail would require a search for someone selling one. We do see rails come up time to time off of rebuilds. The swing seat cooler could be had from a aftermarket source (say West Marine for example).
As for the deck repair, here is some light reading/viewing.

Have you done the bounce test to see if the transom is moving? That crack is a little lower than what would normal liner cracks.
-
No I have not what do you do bounce the motor and see if it flexes
-
Tilt the motor up and put it on the travel locks (hopefully they are not corroded so you can't move them). Then put a towel over the lower section of the outboard and lean over the lower section putting your weight on the lower section and watch the transom as you do this - some have seen it move an inch, some have not seen no movement (preferred).
-
Thank you
it doesn’t seem to move any at all
-
That's a good thing and will let you enjoy the boat until the floor gets too soft or the transom gets too wet. Make sure you check around the bilge drain at the bottom of the transom. Look and see if there are any chips of gelcoat missing around where the plug goes. If there is a garboard plug, remove the screws in the outer portion and look at the screw threads and see if there is any mush on them. I would then seal the screw holes with silicone caulk or 3m 4000.
I know that when I rebuilt mine I did the bounce test and it looked solid but when I decided to cut it, the core was pulp.
-
Ok thanks very much
About how many hours does it take to rebuild
-
Depends on the depth of what you do to it. Figure a couple hundred minimum.
-
I replaced the wood in my transom with Seacast. I have done 5 seasons now, and it works perfect.
It is a big job to get rid of the wood, check out my forum page if you want to see how I did mine.

Will do thank you very much
I will check them out
-
How long did it take you
-
At the time I had some problems with carpal tunnel syndrome, and it took me two weeks working only in the evenings and in the weekends.i also had water in my stringers. It's very important to get rid of all the wood, but it is not impossible. I would rent a chainsaw with a long sword, since that removes the wood but does nothing to the fiberglass. My chainsaw only reached down 2/3rds.
I hope this helps you

That don’t sound to bad just haven’t messed with fiberglass any was hoping to do it over the winter
