Hello.
I want to mount a trolling motor, but I don't know what style, mounting bracket, etc. for my 1984 17' AS.

The boat still has factory bow rails and I'm not sure if they have to be removed or modified to fit trolling motor. If anyone has advise or pictures, it would be greatly appreciated. :)

If this is any help, I have my trolling motor mounted on the transom. I tilt the motor up and then lean against it to operate the trolling motor. Seems to work fine.

When I bought my 170 the orginal owner installed a transom mount trolling motor, but I removed it because I found it difficult to control. I later installed a bow mount 70lbs thrust minn kota rip tide. Its a great setup the motor controls the boat much better on the bow.

For a bow installation you would have to remove the railing. As far as brackets go as long as you get a bow mount motor it will come with a bracket, unless you would like the ability to remove the motor when you store the boat, then you would want a detachable trolling motor mount.

The transom mount would be the easiest and cheapest to install, but if you use it alot I would recommend bow mount. You might also want to look into the Lenco Troll 'n Tabs but they are very $$$$$.

If your planning on going with the bow mount you might like this idea that I used on my flats boat. I took my minn kota to a machine shop and had them make me a couple of stainless steel plates 3/4 x 2 x the width of the bracket. They also threaded the holes in the plate to match the one in the mount. I sat the trolling motor and bracket on the gunnel and marked the holes. Drilled the gunnel and glued the plates to the underside of the gunnel with 5200. The motor mounts flush on the top side and I can also remove it if needed leaving four small holes that I put stainless steel screws in when not being used. I have had it this way since Jan. 2003 and never had a problem. The shop charged 45.00
