Greetings All,

To Cap't Bob,
You were right on the money with this guess..."as to the long number on the registration, I'm guessing that is a State of Maine issued # not anything from Hialeah". I received a detailed explanation how this came about from Maine's Dep't of Inland Fisheries and Waterways. The digits other than the J-297 in the listed serial number are an arbitrary fabrication created to meet the requirements of a departmental database.

OK, so I am back to the well for more info from the membership here:
- does anyone know when AS started complying with the USCG-mandated 12-digit HIN requirement?
- are there any AS hulls registered as 1972 model year with a 12-digit HIN?
- are there any AS hulls registered as 1973 model year with or without a 12-digit HIN?

The objective is to be able to demonstrate to the Canadian Border Security Agency that there are hulls registered as 1973's (or later for that matter) that do not have a 12-digit HIN.

Greatly appreciate any support/insight that members here can provide!
Brgds,

Tom

Here's an old member's 73 19-6 that was registered without a HIN.

...reviving an old thread...

So I did manage to successfully "import" the boat into Canada. The CBSA paid no attention whatsoever to the fact that the "J-297" serial number does not conform to the USCG-mandated 12-digit HIN format.

A rebuild is now in progress. The I/O configuration is being converted to a bracket-mounted outboard. The transom was (of course) found to be terminally rotten, so it has been cut out (from the inside), the skin ground and is being prepped for a new lay-up. I was surprised to find a number of voids in the transom glass, so it will need to be levelled out so that I get uniform contact with the new transom. Question: can anyone tell me what AS used as a bonding/filler material between the transom and the skin? The stuff is grey, doesn't have any fibers in it and sands/grinds like Bondo. What is this stuff?

Remarkably, the sole has no soft spots whatsoever, which I attribute to two factors; the ply was glassed on the underside and secondly, there is no foam in the hull outboard of the stringers. The foam in the stringers is dry. The tank came out easily enough (60 gal alu tank) despite being foamed in. The tank coffin floor was not really glassed in, just tabbed, so it came out easily in one piece.

Looking forward to getting the structural work done so that we can get on to the cleaner work.
