Title: Costs of replacing a Deck & Stringers in 222 Flatback?.?.?
Post by: Sizzle13 on April 21, 2022, 02:38:07 PM
Good Afternoon Folks,

I'm hoping that someone on the forms can breakdown the costs of replacing a "Full Deck and Possibly the "Stringers" in a vintage 80's 222 FlatBack ? ..... It would be very helpful if someone on Classic AquaSport could ballpark the "Best and Worst" case scenario's for this project.

Thanks for your time,
Best Regards,
Sizzle13

'80s 22-2 were 12 degree hulls.  The last year of the Flatback was '71.
The cost of rebuild depends on what you are going to use for materials and if your labor is included or not.

Welcome to the site. The answer is wide and vast. Too many variables to answer accurately or even close. I would recommend starting with phone calls to your local fiberglass suppliers, boat yards, or a local boat manufacture that might sell stuff. Ask for what a sheet of 3/4” core of your choice costs (Coosa, plywood, divinycel), roll of 1708 fiberglass, pail of polyester laminating resin or epoxy kit. Gelcoat or paint? Spraying yourself?

Pictures speak a thousand words so starting with a picture of the hull your starting with would give a general idea of what is really bad. Stringer replacement is unlikely but I assume your in for transom, deck, and stringer foam replacement? Removing inside liner? Closing transom? What kind of bracket? Used or new motor and what horsepower.

Thanks for the input, I’ll try to post photos. I’m looking at a boat that may have problems and I was attempting to get a feel for how deep is to deep. Lol

I'm doing what I'd consider a "basic" deck replacement (on top of the transom, but I'll leave those costs out).  On my 19-1, I'd say I used 3 sheets of half inch marine ply, 1.5-2 rolls of 1708 (I did two layers on the top of the deck, one under.  Probably 5-6 gallons of epoxy.  A couple of gallons of bonding putty. Call it $500 worth of two part foam.  Figure in a few hundred dollars in random materials (rollers, paint buckets, etc).  If I had to ballpark what I have in the deck only, I'd say $3k+ without painting anything, and I'm not putting the casting deck back in.  Most guys will do a fuel tank when they're in there, it would be a shame to get a deck in and realize you should have done a transom, which is easier done from the inside than the outside... I guess what I'm saying is its not a $1000 fix, probably closer to a $5,000 fix (for the deck), and can easily be a $10,000+ fix if you want it to be.
