twins on 22-2
« on: June 26, 2006, 03:40:10 PM »
I have found a killer deal on twin 90 hondas.2003 motors with very low hours.Any thoughts on weight and such? Seems like it would be a great way to go. I should add it's a 1976 22-2 with 12deg. deadrise I believe.

I say go for it. Thin of how sweet that setup would be. I'm sure that thing would move too. Honda is a relatively good motor and people only have compliments about it so i would pull the trigger.

I saw a nice 22-2CCP with twin 90HP Honda 4-strokes.  Sweet!  Think about how you could troll with just one sipping at something like a gallon and a half per hour...

saw that boat, way underpowered in my opinion but i love the security twins give u at the same time. That boat should have 200 hp minimum, also one 200hp weighing between 450-500lbs. Underpower w/ alot of weight translates into much strain on motor/motors to plane and cruise. That boat looked very well cared for and in all likelyhood refurbished in many areas including the transom, deck and perhaps stringers. If so, what work? I'm also curious to see how the boat sits at rest as well as sea trial conditions. Those 90hp hondas weigh almost what a big V6 2 stroke weighs, what the boat was designed to carry. did they reinforce the transom somehow? Sorry to sound negative, but i think its a disservice to you to say to jump on something that looks 'turnkey".That owner may have realized that he powered the boat wrong and recoop his losses. If its everything he says it is then give it every consideration.I would have questions about whats been done to the boat(structurally, mechanically) and how it performs, rides, drifts, sits at the dock. Knowing the true story may save u from alot of dissapointment, let the buyer beware

need to correct myself, had just seen the 222 w/ twin 90's, should read more 1st. Besides that, perhaps strong motors, wrong motors for that boat, wrong HP, wrong weight

I would not touch it without a thorough sea trial.  That's like having an extra man riding in the back all the time.

However, if it's a "killer" deal like you say, you can always recoup your money by selling the motors and re-powering.

Even with the extra weight on the back, I'd be willing to bet it sits better in the water than a rebuilt 22 with a full transom and a porta bracket, and I see that all the time.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you'll like having twins back there.  Please take some pictures and report how the performance is.  I think you'll be happily surprised.
