Quick answer needed re: trailer connection
« on: March 20, 2012, 11:19:14 AM »
I am taking my boat for a repower in a couple hours and have a 4/7 trailer adapter for my Tahoe and trailer... I need a 5/7.  I included a pic below - I think the blue/purple is for reverse lights... Am I ok running it wothout the one connector attached or will I blow something? Maybe a quick stop at Home Depot along the way (That's where I got this adapter)?

Do you have surge brakes on your trailer?  If so the back up lights activate a solenoid that disable the brakes so you can back up the trailer.  If you don't have brakes or your not going to back up much than you should be OK.  If you do back up and incline or on some soft ground that may be enough resistance to apply the surge brakes.  So if you find you can't back up that is why.  some trailer may have a manual shut off valve too to allow backing up.

I do have surge brakes on my trailer.  There is a pin to install that locks out the brakes.  I found a 5/7 connector along my route at a Lowe's so I will pick it up on the way. I just didn't want to short anything out in the meantime.
Thanks!

Here is the standard wiring for a boat trailer - note this includes both electric brakes (blue) and surge brakes (purple).

Thanks for the help guys... I stopped and got a 5/7 connector and returned the 4/7 I had on the way up to drop my boat off.  I did use the 4/7 for about 20 miles without an issue - brake lights and turn signals worked.  Now I have the right adapter and cant wait to get her back repowered!

Just booked a slip ffor the season as well... in a couple weeks it will be time for some good fishing(hopefully)! :salut:
