1986 Aquasport 271 FULL REBUILD PROJECT.
« on: November 08, 2009, 07:22:20 PM »
Hello Guys.   I just purchased a 1986 Aquasport 271  or should I say 281 8)    I do fiberglass work, gelcoat, awlgrip, structural for a living.  Ive been a Mako fan all my life but since I got on top of this boat I fell in love with the space.    It truly looks like a great fishing machine.

  Got the hull for $1400.  I am the second owner of the boat.   My plans are a full rebuild.  Remove all teak and replace with starboard.   Build the fuel tank lids out of kledgecell, Nidacore or Coosa core.  Close the transom, install full bracket with platform with twin Yamaha 200's or 225's.   And some other things.

     Here are some pics of the boat from yesterday exactly how I got it home.

Welcome aboard clctrader  :!:  :!:
I didn't know that an Osprey model that big was in the line-up - she's huge  8)  What's the beam on her?
Looks a lot better after the pressure washer  :thumleft:

Thanks...

  The beam is 9'.8  but since the gunnels are open at the bottom it looks even wider.   Yes, this boat is HUGE.  The pictures dont do it justice at all.  This is the reason why I bought her.  I will be in the process of making the new fuel tank lids out of composite and currently shopping around for a new modern console.  Trying to reduce the weight of the boat in the restoration process so it will be more efficient.
     Thats the main reason I dont want to use the factory console.

    The floor has some soft spots as well and the rear compartment by the engines needs to be completely redone.  I will post pics as I go.

    Anyone has any info they like to share on this boat?  How they ride?    Some people have told me its an efficient hull, good ride but its a little wet.   I was thinking of installing splash rails and a nice windshield on the console.  But thats later down the rebuild.

Welcome!!! Man that thing is huge!! Its always amazing what saltwater can do to metal, those outdrives are unreal!!! Reminds me of my original trailer and its lack of crossmembers due to rust!

That is a sweet ride!! Did the motors turn over or are they completely shot?  Looks great and I look forward to following the progress.  Nice Find!

Welcome aboard clctrader.

Very interesting boat.
I see no reference to a 1986 271 Osprey in our limited reference section. <!-- s:scratch: -->:scratch:<!-- s:scratch: -->
There is however a 270 XF. The specs fit your boat, sorta. LOA and beam are real close.

I wonder if it's an 270 model XF (not CCP) hull with an Osprey cap?  <!-- s:idea: -->:idea:<!-- s:idea: -->
Would you be willing to measure the deadrise on your craft. Osprey's usually have about 12 degrees while the CCP's have 19.
The 270 XF is listed at 20 degrees.

A very interesting find indeed!  <!-- s:thumright: -->:thumright:<!-- s:thumright: -->

Please keep us posted with your progress.

The total length is 28.1 with pulpit.   27.1 without   and 9.7 wide.    I will get the deadrise tomorow.

    I already purchased a very very nice center console and leaning post for the boat.  Will get some pictures tomorow.  I have a lot of work to do on the boat, but am currently working on a friends project.

     Since I dont have new pics to post, here is what I did to my last boat.  Its very similar to what I want to do to this one.  Not trying to deviate you guys from the subject or attract attention to another website.  Just showing some of my work and my plans for the Aquasport but with twin outboards and full platform.

 Just trying to keep this post interesting...
There are 3 pages full of pictures on this link, you can just look at the pics and get the point real quick. boat was fully finished but new pictures never posted with the nonskid on the deck as well as the t top extension .

Still have it in my house.  I sold it but the guy is in a jam with the shipping.  Dont know whats gonna happen with it.

   Ive been working non-stop and truly havent had time for the Aquasport.   I plan on finishing what am doing by the mid of next week.  After that all my time will be going to the Aqua. Gotta make some $ first so I can dump it on the project :mrgreen:

Carlos, Your Mako 258 thread was kinda a cliffhanger, I really wanted to see your finished project. You did a great job on that boat, and I'd like to see the final results; could you post some pics of the finished pulpit/ windlass, finish gelcoat, windshield...etc on that tread when you get a chance? I am going to be excited to see your AS 271 build.
