Launch Sandblasted Hull without Barrier Coat?
« on: April 03, 2018, 10:50:26 AM »
So I got my 175 sandblasted this year to remove 30 years of bottom paint.  It came out great, now I just need to wait until it's warm enough to touch up problem areas with Marine Tex, barrier coat, and paint on a few layers of antifouling.  Which doesn't appear to be happening soon as it's now April 3rd and 32 degrees outside.

My question is-Could there be harm to launching my boat and fishing a day without any barrier coat?  I will post pictures shortly today.  The idea is there are some tides I want to fish, which will likely happen before the air temperature rises to between 50-70 long enough for me to paint for a few days.

If the hull where it was sandblasted has/had blisters, or other voids in the gel coat, putting it in the water will introduce moisture into areas you will work to repair with the marine-tex.  If you are doing blister coat you must be concerned about hull porosity.  It sounds to me you really want to let the thing dry as well as it can before blister coat and then bottom paint.
If there were no blisters and no holes through the gel coat then you don't have a problem and you won't need blister coat, in my opinion.

I don't know if I would take the chance, as Doug said.

There are a couple areas where it has not blisters but some voids in gelcoat, mostly chips from run ins with the rocky areas I like to drift through and cast for striped bass.  I should at the very least patch those with the marine tex beforehand I guess.  Safe bet would be to not launch until I've done it all
