Aquasport Discussion / Transom saddle
« Last post by Ringo on Today at 12:57:44 PM »
I'm new here looking at a '74 170. I don't understand the saddle in the transom seems like water would come over it when you slow down suddenly. I wonder what the thought was behind that design. Thanks

Glassed starboard stern deck piece in. 4 and 6 inch layers of 1708 with a layer of mat that goes all the way up the gunnel.

5200 and poly bonding putty all the decks down except the center piece. Got a couple things to finish on the tank, mainly grounding. Used poly structural putty in the rear gutter to clean some stuff up. Not sure how I'm going to wrap the glass from the deck into the gutter, but will probably grind the corners round and fill any voids.

Starboard side glued down with 5200 and port side glassed. Will have to add that box back in to cover the bilge hole. That is also where I'm running the fuel hose out of.

Alright guess I'll start looking into buying that putty to rebond the floor to the stringers

It would be best to remove that concrete like stuff, take a crows foot or small crowbar/chisel and hammer it usually chips off pretty easily. Was there to fill the voids between the original deck and stringers and glue the deck down. Your new deck might not necessarily have the same voids, hopefully no big gaps to fill. Maybe do a trial fit with the original 'pads' still there before you go through the trouble of removing, see how the new deck lays out. If that stuff was filling very low spots on the stringers maybe leave it?
Take note of where that rigging channel is so when you screw the console down you don't hit a fuel line, wiring...

The rub rail is damaged on the port aft corner, so I decided to replace that part of the stiffener as well as the entire insert.

Damaged rub rail stiffener.

The stiffener and flexible insert are listed on the Taco Web site (https://tacomarine.com/rub-rail-store-vinyl-inserts-v12-0303), but apparently they no longer stock the stiffener. I found three online vendors that have some, but only as a single 20-foot piece, which requires an expensive shipping charge. One of the vendors (Blackburn Marine, https://www.blackburnmarine.com/) agreed to cut up the stiffener into three pieces before shipping it. If you can’t find a piece of stiffener in a salvage yard, I recommend you consider this approach.

This stuff is great. Filled the void great seems legit. 5200 everywhere except where the polyester structural stuff was laid down. Will glass over the 5200.
