Title: 2013 Aquasport Octoberfest!
Post by: GoneFission on July 22, 2013, 05:27:51 PM
OK, we've worked out the details and we are good to go for this year's Aquasport Octoberfest on October 25-26!     We are going back to Southport, NC and the par-tay life will be at the same house as last year.   :thumleft:  The weather should be good, with warm days and cool nights.  We will have a get-together on Friday and the big, Gran-inspired oyster/seafood throwdown on Saturday.    :pig:   We will plan to fish on Friday and Saturday, so you can come down and fish either day or both.  :nemo:  :fish:  :nemo:  :fish:

One change this year - for the last couple years, Lewis/Bridget and Scott have forked over the $$$ for some excellent food/arrangements (including the world's best cheesegrits!).    :chef:  We passed a hat each year, but came up a bit short...     I'm sure we all agree that these nice folks should not have to pay for the food we all enjoy out of their pocket, so we are asking for $50 per registrant for those who will be joining us.   That will give our social directors a budget and enough funding to make a plan.  It's $50 per registrant, so the Admiral is covered at no additional charge if she comes along (this is in keeping with Navy tradition - have you ever seen an Admiral pay a check?).

So mark those calendars now for October 25-26; it's going to be another great Aquasport reunion - see you there!   :salut:

OK, so if I was to fly on back there, what would be the Airport of choice?
What area should I be looking into?

Thanks
Bryan

You fly into Wilmington NC, about 30 minutes from Scott's house and very close to Southport.

Yep, fly right on in to Wilmington, ILM! Connect through ATL (Delta) or CLT (US Air)....55 minutes from ATL, 40 minutes from Charlotte.

There is a very special prize for the participant who comes the longest distance. Not sure what that prize is yet  but I must tell you our bud Lewis is quite inventive :thumright:

Maybe you can coordinate with Bondobill, he is thinking of coming too! :thumright:

Hopefully the Florida brethren will come up, the New England brethren will come down..... and join us !!  :salut:

We have some new members from the Carolinas...bring your boats and head on over!!

This adult event is open to all members, their wives and significant others. We have a GREAT time, the weather is gorgeous, and we eat like kings and queens!

Man...I look forward to that weekend more than any of the year :flower:

Ya'll come!! :thumright:

Looks like Delta flies into your airport.
Once I am home I will figure it out.

Just asking

Aubrey, thanks for posting, were gonna miss ya!

Guys, here is a "lay of the land"

Southport is on the mainland. Oak Island is due south across the marsh. Our house is on the east end of Oak Island, near the river mouth. Bald Head Island (not shown) is to the east of the river mouth.

Somebody here will hook you up!  We've all got tackle, rods, and reels.  :thumleft: Also, water temps that time of year will be about 75-80 degrees F, so any west coasters don't have to worry about hypothermia if you go overboard...

All who don't have one will need a NC Coastal Recreational Fishing License - you can get one online at:
 http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/recreat ... s-and-fees (http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/recreational-fishing-license-types-and-fees)

Hope to see everyone there - it's gonna be great!

Alrighty, we are set to go with our block of rooms at the Hampton Inn in Southport!

It is 5 minutes from the ramp, 10 minutes from Par-tay Central

http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels ... index.html (http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/north-carolina/hampton-inn-southport-SPTNCHX/index.html)

The rooms are reserved under "Classic Aquasport Reunion". The quoted rate is $94.00 per night, however, I'm planning on negotiating that further. The more reservations we have the better :thumright:

Hi guys...getting closer

We have more boats this year....so got to thinking about secure storage.

You guys may remember the first year we needed a trailer part....so we stopped at the boat/trailer place on the right going in. It is about ten minutes from the house.

Found out later the owner also had a fiberglass shop, and makes parts...dockboxes, consoles, etc. So the inset footrest on Miss D came from him. We did a little horsetrading on that, so we became friends.

Anyway...just called and asked him about storage there for our boats. He said no problem, bring as many as we want....for FREE. Access any time of the day or night.

So good deal....all Classic Aquasport members are welcome :salut:

See ya then

Thanks so much guys

Yes, she is deceivingly smooooooth

JD and I took her fishing yesterday. It was nasty ROUGH. The boat ran and rode great.

We did not get skunked. A three pound bluefish hit a pogy on the downrigger. Miss D got bloody.
It was great

That was all we caught.

If you are a good fisherman you are also a good fibber. Lewis called and was told we caught fourteen king mackeral, the largest  29 pounds. Then later we said we sold the fish for $893.00.

Full disclosure...'twas a lie.

He never believed us anyway, but was fun while it lasted.

You probably should not show the tachs at 4500...       Or are they set to read half-speed?

Since there's two, maybe they're cumulative with a 4.49% error factored in for shrinkage.

Personally I like starboard mount, somewhat consumed, sea condition indicator. :drunken:

What doesn't the Miss D have???

Our pal JD took the video :thumright:  JD was in law enforcement  once, so he is familiar with gauges that fail to read correctly. He dealt mostly with speedometers... but certainly tachometers are apt to read improperly as well

Shrinkage is only an issue in castings. In boating, and especially fishing...EXPANSION is the modus operendi

Those sea-state indicators are important. In moderation, they assist navigation. They also aid the crew in overall  enthusiasm....especially important upon return for detailing and fish cleaning. That is, if you catch fish

Miss D is lacking a few things. She is pretty roomy though,  so  there is space for the admiral and special needs.

Any boat is always a work in progress.

Reckon that's why we love them :thumright:

Good stuff guys

Kudos to Fitz on the little twins. He knows Mercurys better than most technicians.

He rebuilt the carbs, water pumps, thermostats, and added the Bay Mfg. extension kits. The throttle linkages were set up backwards by a jackleg...he figured that out too.

They crank on the first turn, idle down perfectly, cruise beautifully, and run WOT like two small bats outta hades :thumright:

The US Open King Tournament in Southport was won last weekend by John Lewis, fishing by himself on his 23 foot center console.  His 47 lb. fish was worth $67,000 - that will buy some gas and bait!    We will see what the Aquasport fleet can do in a couple weeks!   :bounce:  :bounce:  :bounce:

Maybe Scott can chime in, but the main question is where did he catch it??  40 miles out or inshore.  My guess would be offshore.

He was from Morehead. If he had a go-fast, he could've caught it in Morehead, but since his boat was a 23....probably not.

They say they fired up real strong in the River Channel on Sunday. Most likely pretty close to where we were fishing last trip. They were nice fish too....55th place was 29 pounds

OIFC Report:

FISHING REPORT 10/7/13
INSHORE:  Redfish continue to be on fire, particularly the big bull Reds.  Everywhere from waterways, to inlets to 50' of water offshore has been holding schools of big Redfish.  It is a growing fishery that stands to really gain some traction in the area.  I have also seen quite a few nice Flounder and am getting word of the Trout beginning to make their appearance.  All in all, inshore fishing is very good right now.

OFFSHORE:  Last email I sent out I said the King fishing was "on the brink" of cutting loose.  Well, it cut loose this past weekend at the US Open as it took a 32 pounder to make the top 30, with a 47 pounder taking all the money.  The fishing was great with the majority of the fishing action from 50-70 feet of water.  I made a run offshore to 100 feet to check it out, but it was a desert out there; the Kings had all moved inshore.  Thus I believe the fish were on the move this weekend.  The day after the US Open, this past Sunday, I got a report that the Cape Fear Ship Channel had turned on big time with lots of big King Mackerel.  The fish were one day behind for the Open, but I believe are going to be right on time for the Fall Brawl.  This weekend the forecast is for North winds in the 10-20kts range.  That will make for ideal Fall beach fishing conditions, which is what I think the fish are going to be ready to provide.  I certainly like my odds in the Ship Channel but I'm thinking Yaupon or Lockwood might just be a surprise.  Shallotte has a chance too, but typically you see the best fishing start in the Ship Channel then move down the beach toward Shallotte Inlet.  Either way I think back several years ago when the Allen family fished their 22 foot bay boat at Shallotte Inlet in a 20+kts North wind and won with a 36 pounder.  Get out your chum grinders, balloons and kites -- its gonna be a perfect setup to get on the hook.  Also not to be overlooked is the Wahoo fishing.  It was off the hook last week as I finally timed it right and hit a hot Wahoo bite.  A few friends joined me on Wednesday for an all-out Wahoo bonanza as we boated 11 out of 25 or so Wahoo bites, ranging in size from 20-48 pounds.  This action is just in time for the annual Hook A Hoo  Wahoo tournament- October 12-27.  The tournament's format allows you to choose your fishing day over the two weeks.  The OIFC is a weigh-station as well this year.  CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS.

Title: Re: 2013 Aquasport Octoberfest - Fishing Report
Post by: GoneFission on October 14, 2013, 11:58:25 AM
Here's the latest fishing report for the Southport area: Anglers are seeing some solid king mackerel action along the beachfront at Oak Island, at nearshore spots like Yaupon Reef, and on out the Cape Fear River channel to Lighthouse Rocks. Live menhaden and bluefish are the best bets for anglers looking to connect with the kings, but anglers can also troll dead cigar minnows with success.

Gulf Stream trollers are reporting a red-hot wahoo bite while trolling the blue water around spots like the Blackjack Hole and Steeples. Ballyhoo paired with skirted trolling lures, especially in darker hues, are fooling most of the wahoo.

Grouper are feeding around offshore structure like rocks, wrecks, and live bottoms in 90’+ of water, and they’ve been quite cooperative lately, with some boats hauling home limit catches. Live baits like menhaden and pinfish are the best bets for anglers looking to weed through the smaller bottomfish to get to the grouper.

Inshore, anglers are still finding red drum feeding on the flats and in the bays off the lower Cape Fear River and ICW. They’ll bite topwater plugs, soft plastic lures, and a wide variety of other artificials and natural baits.

Flounder are feeding heavily with the arrival of fall, and anglers are hooking good numbers of citation (5+ lbs.) fish. Live baits like menhaden and finger mullet are top choices for the flatfish, but anglers can also hook up while working scented soft plastics like Gulps. The creeks, inshore structure (like docks), inlets, and nearshore structure (like Yaupon Reef) are all holding good numbers of flounder right now, and the action should hold up until the water temperatures dip deeply as winter approaches.

Speckled trout are also looking for meals in the creeks, marshes, and around inshore structure. Live shrimp are almost impossible for the specks to turn down, but anglers can also tempt them to bite topwater plugs, soft plastics, and a wide variety of other artificial lures
.

So who's gonna win?

No Bob we get some clam water but it is never that color, water here is to damn cold to look like that!

I believe that was taken at Dog Island FL, and used to illustrate an article in Wooden Boat.
Rob White was a prolific builder of small wooden boats and a fantastic writer.. He was based out of Thomasville Georgia and he wrote among other things about a family camp on Dog Island that required the use of a boat to "cross the sound" in some snotty weather.  He said that rig in the picture could make it to Bimini on 5 gallons of diesel on a good day.. Not that he would ever try it..

Yeah this thread hung a left!

Cool by me  as long as he's on my boat

Weather:

Mother Nature has dished out some unusual weather the past twelve days. There has been a stationary coastal low (northeaster) imbedded here since two weekends ago. We have had no more than 2 hours of sunshine in the last 300 hours.

The forecast calls for the low to move offshore today....followed by a cold front with a good chance of rain, lingering through Sunday. Then....dry high pressure (sunshine) builds in from the northwest Monday/Tuesday. So things are looking much better :salut:

We should be thankful. The weekend of Oct 12-15 (last weekend) was rainy and windy, same forecast for this weekend. If the stars align, we should have the same beautiful weather next weekend we've always enjoyed :thumright:

We have had light off shore winds and beautiful 80 degree weather since I have been back from Maui.
It has been awesome.  The Pacific is like a bay.

Cool high pressure coming in. First cold snap of the season. Highs next weekend predicted in the upper sixties...lows upper forties.

Given that...water is still around 72. The snap should bring the big fish  to the beach for the mullet run.  The beach bite is yet to occur.

Captains...check this out and make note of these numbers in your GPS log. Have a good feeling about this spot, the old Cape Fear Sea Buoy...it's famous. 49 pound KM caught there yesterday. The buoy is no longer there...but the bottom is.

The Lighthouse Rocks are only 2.5 miles offshore.

Yes we are!! Forecast is sunny, cool, and beautiful! Woo Hoo!!

Update:

This cool snap should fire up the fish....high low sixties, lows upper forties. However...the water temp is still in the low seventies. So the actual air temp oceanfront should be milder than the official forecast.

I'll be making live bait rigs the next couple days in between fleecing tourists

So don't worry about buying rigs...they'll be provided.

Fish:

If you want to keep fish, bring a knife, some bags and a cooler. Kings don't freeze well, so they'll need to be consumed within a few days. We'll probably catch (hopefully)  and release on my boat, depending on who wants to keep fish. They have been catching nice flounder at Yaupon Reef, so we'll definitely want to keep those.

Captains, either way, don't forget a gaff :salut:

Yep, looks like they changed it. Must be a secondary frontal passage, or "reinforcing high pressure" as they call it.

Friday might be hot tub day. Bring your swimsuits and bikinis :flower:

Not posted this year, but was last year. Here we are for 2013:

Friday morning, fleet meets at the Southport ramp, puts in. Somewhere around 9 am.

Fish all day.

Friday night, steak night at the house. Sunset celebration precedes at 5 PM.

Saturday: back at the ramp in the morning, fish. Pull out, clean up, sunset celebration at the house, 5 PM.

Saturday evening: The legendary Octoberfest Dinner/Dance/Carolina Shrimparoo/Hot Tub "can't get enough" extravaganza, featuring Life of the Party Margaritas.

Sunday:

Captain's Choice

Guys, we had a great time

Bryan and his lovely wife Melanie arrived from Cali, and were introduced to the redneck lifestyle. Wonderful folks and fun to be with :flower:

Forecast for Friday was correct based on the forecast earlier in the week. North wind sustained at 25 to 30 mph. So we just hung out and bonded  Some went shopping, others toured the fort, some went surf fishing in front of the house.

Saturday morning dawned clear, lighter winds, but cold. Bryan and Melanie were on Miss D, Bridget and Lew on Gone Fission, Gary, JD and Jeremy on Ocean Potion, and Jon and Rhonda on Lillypad. We all headed to the ramp and went fishing.

Catching live bait was very difficult to impossible. The water had cooled down, as soon as the net hit the water...bam, they were gone. All of the boats were coming up empty. We finally lucked into a dozen and went fishing.

It turned into a gorgeous day and warmed up nicely. The ocean was beautiful.

Gone Fission was top boat. Bridget won the prize for largest fish, and took home one million dollars. Lewis will never have to work again.

We had a great time, and the food turned out deluxe. Special thanks to Bondobill, your unbelievable salmon was the real deal and very popular :salut:

Thanks to everyone for coming...see ya next year   :salut:

Pics to follow from the gang!

Well Bob, here's the deal:

Captain John said it was Bridget who caught the largest fish on his boat. Our boat caught two bluefish and two sharks, which could have been larger than Bridget's fish.... but we went green and released our whoppers to fight another day.

Besides that... those nasties were trying to get fish blood in our boat.

JD and Rhojo had some fish too, but none were able to be compared to Bridget's. Bridget's fish.... no one saw, since Lewis cleaned it off to himself ASAP.  Not sure they were trying to destroy the evidence, but something smells fishy

Lewis and Bridget love Pensacola, so with this financial windfall, they will be able to purchase the home of Lewis's dreams:

Scotty, last Saturday when we were in the hospital ER, this guy about my age was walking around, kinda looking like he was waiting to get seen.  He was holding his hand, after several passes around us I could see a lure in his hand.  Made the comment, "You're supposed to catch fish with those."  Asked him what he had, he showed me...a treble hook barb embedded in the fleshy part below the thumb.  I told him what to do, drink a few beers to build up the courage, push the hook through to expose the barb, cut it off and pull the hook out...easy peasy.  He was like...really???  Said "yep, that's what they're gonna do..."

Hour or so later he comes back.  "Hey bud, they did just what you said they would!"  Too bad he didn't take my advice, would have saved him a couple hundred.  BTW, he told me someone at a flea market gave him the lure for free.  I told him, nope, you just paid $200 for that lure!  Better catch some goddam fish!!!

We plan this thing for a year and if Mother Nature doesn't get on board we can't complain about that. Friday may have been crap but let me tell you Saturday was BEAUTIFUL! We started out bundled up but the wind and cold temps really laid down for us.  :flower:

It was great to meet the left-coasters, Bryan and Melanie! What a long trip but I really hope they had as much fun as we did. :salut:

Our host and hostess teams did and do a fantastic job of making sure everything is just right. The house was great and the food, well the food, now you just can't do it justice by saying it was great. We ate like bloody KINGS I tell you, Kings! Oh my gosh. Thanks so much to Scott, Capt. John and Betsy, Lewis and Bridgett, we really appreciate EVERYTHING ALL OF YOU DO for this get together.  :king:  :queen:

Thanks once again to BondoBill for his contribution of smoked salmon, it was mouth watering!  :shaking2:

Great to have Dupree and his friend Jeremy and of course Gman made the scene and added his wife this year. Awesome, just awesome.  :pirat:

I did miss the Florida guys this year!

I'm going to leave it at that for now. I've got a lot of great pics to post so let me soak a little more and I'll try to get the pics up and more sentiment before the end of the week!

I can't wait for next year! :bounce:

We all had a great time!  Thanks to everyone for helping out and making this a fantastic event.  :salut:  The world champion foosball tournaments at 2:30 am were also pretty interesting...   :pirat:   I did not get a chance to shoot a lot of pics, but here are a few:

We had some boats there - Miss D (the showboat), Ocean Potion, Gone Fission, and LilllyPad in the driveway - Gary (Gman) showed up later with his CCP:
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/BoatShow2_zpseca10245.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/BoatShow2_zpseca10245.jpg.html)

Friday's weather was windy, but we had a great sunrise on Saturday:
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/OakIslandSunrise_zps6ac95233.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/OakIslandSunrise_zps6ac95233.jpg.html)

We had some good eats - like Scott's super-select oysters - anyone want a slurp?
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/Oysters_zpsff0163d5.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/Oysters_zpsff0163d5.jpg.html)

Our group - from coast to coast!  Bryan and Melanie win for longest commute!  Here's the lineup from left to right:  Back row:  Betsy, Gary (Gman), Kathy, Bridget, Lewis (slvring), Melanie, Bryan (Iceman), John D, Rhonda, Jon (Rhojo).  Front row:  Cap'n John (GoneFission), Ginger the Beachdog, and Scott (gran398).  Jeremy's such a nice guy that he took the pic, so he's not in it, but he was there!
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/GroupPhoto_zps1c6bfb27.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/GroupPhoto_zps1c6bfb27.jpg.html)

And Bridget wins the Million Dollar Bill prize for her MONSTER mackerel - does she look happy?
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/MillionWinnerBridget_zpscaf4d1bc.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/MillionWinnerBridget_zpscaf4d1bc.jpg.html)

And a beautiful sunset to end a really fun day:

This is an amazing group - and we met on the Internet, or "that damn Aquanet" as someone might say...    Thanks to all who made the trip!   :thumleft:

This post reminded me of a fishing event a former co-worker of mine had a few weeks ago.  He went out by himself trolling for grouper with one of the large diving plugs (you know, the kind with two big treble hooks).  Managed to catch a big grouper and got him on the boat, but the fish was still pretty green and was flopping all over the place.  So, he tries to grab it and manages to get a hook in his thumb.  Pushes it through just as you mentioned, but doesn't have cutting pliers big enough to cut through the thick hook.  So he takes a knife and tries to cut his thumb enough to back the hook out the way it went in.  He is now bleeding like a stuck pig and ends up passing out.  Comes to a little later with a knot on his forehead, his face laying on the grouper (which is now dead), and his other hand is now attached to the other hook.  After all that he somehow managed to get the hooks out and kept on fishing!

Sorry for the derail...back to the get together!

Bob, you are completely correct in the hook removal.
I have been hooked in  the hand several times.
In the leg maybe a couple and once in the thigh.
I pushed through and cut off all but the thigh. She was buried deep.
I was fishing in Cabo when it happened.
I had to go to the Doctor's office.
He came in and asked if I could help him as his assistant went home already, I did.
It was wrapped around a tendon.
He added a couple of stitches and I paid him, cost me 18.00 US.

We had an awesome time!
We also learned a thing or two,

Tea is only served sweet and more sweet.

I know the BnB owners life story better than my wife of 25 years.

Everything is fried, no matter what.

You"all is not the boat swaying.

Everything you eat is also covered in a bread or cheese or hot vinegar.

Shrimp is a breakfast, lunch or dinner meal.

Cheesegrits is a breakfast staple like Starbucks coffee out here.

My heart was blessed more in the weekend than my entire life.

All kidding aside, we really enjoyed the trip.
We can't wait till next year and will stay more than a weekend.
I want to thank all the people we meet and especially Scott for his generosity.
His boat is sweet and Bob, you did an awesome job.

Lewis, thanks so much, I really appreciate the help.
Capt John, an honor to meet you and your wife
All the others, thanks so much for spending time with us.

See you there next year!

First off, a big thanks to Capt. John and Betsy for opening their house up to us as they have each year.  This would not be possible without them :salut:

Gary (gman), enjoyed having you on my boat :salut:   Sorry the fishing was slow but I enjoyed the company.  If you still have the 222 CCP itch, let me know and we will head down to Harker's and check that one out :thumright:

After the blood, sweat, and tears (from laughing) at the foosball table, the champion is Scott Rhodes.  We had some duals just like gladiators, but Scott beat me by 1 shot   I could only imagine Scott and I on the same team.  We might could tour the country

Thanks to everyone, I had a great time :salut:

BTW, Thanks to Rhojo (Jon) for this great shot of my crew underway.  This is just a great shot :salut:

Some folks have been asking what we were using to slay the Spanish Mackerel - it was a Sea Striker Spanish Tree Rig, with a chrome Gotcha or chrome Mirrolure on the end.  It's the best Spanish bait I've used in a long time - doubles are fairly common - here's a link for ya:

Finally....the spots are running! Imagine a flounder with the sweet taste of grouper....you have a spot. Had several spots tonight.

Man...they hit the spot

Scotty, those spots look like they have a redfish mouth...
Title: Re: 2013 Aquasport Octoberfest!
Post by: gran398 on November 05, 2013, 05:06:40 AM
Yep SB, they do have very similar mouths. Just did a little research; they are in the same family. Both are in general bottom feeders, but the reds are capable of eating crustaceans. The spot is aka "spot croaker". The red also makes a croaking or "drum" sound when stressed. Guess that's why they are also called drum.

As far as vittles....the little spot puts his bigger buddy to shame :thumright:

Yep SB, came out really fortunate on the old girl. The former partner signed her over today in full....no money exchanged.

Then transferred 50% ownership to a guy here in town who, among other ventures, is a yacht broker. He has a full shop, mechanics, wetslips, etc. In return, his stake is to fix her up to good working/offshore/overnighting order. New interior, new genset, AC, head, galley, etc. All of the pretty finishing work which wasn't addressed after the former partner dove on me.

Plus... no cost wetslip. That size goes for $700 a month at the marinas here. He also covers insurance, all maintenance, hurricane expenses, etc.

Pretty excited. It's like losing your wallet chock full of money....then finding it three years later :thumright:

And to think Scotty, a couple years ago she was on the market and you would have taken a bath should she have sold!!

Excellent my Bro!  Excellent!  And quite the mother ship she would be!  For all who don't know, she's a '63 (right Scotty?) Hatt 36' Convertible, here's a link to her pics...http://s259.photobucket.com/user/seabob ... t=3&page=1 (http://s259.photobucket.com/user/seabob4/library/Scotts63Hatteras?sort=3&page=1)

With that little girl on the water, I just may make it up for the 2014 Oktoberfest!

Yep Bryan, she's a Hatteras.

SB, was bought as  a '63, but per USCG documentation a '64. There was a ton of work done 6-7-8 years ago. New tanks...which meant cutting out the deck. New deck, carbs, heat exchangers, engine work, belts, pulleys, steering, batts, windows, salon doors, curtains, wiring, powdercoat, paint, Schaeffer riggers, Furuno/Icom/Shakespeare, fighting chair, life raft, etc. But before she was finished...the former partner threw in the towel.

His timing was perfect. Less than a year later, the stock market had a 60% haircut...the Great Recession had begun.

Pulled the boat, put it on the hill. And there she's sat for close to three years.

Bob you're right....I'm a lucky guy. And darn grateful for this stroke of new luck.

You're right SB. Karma isn't free to any of us.

The Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

I've been hooked before following this mantra. A crook will always be a crook, and yep, I'm too trusting.

On the other hand, in business I bend over backwards to provide folks their money's worth.

Being small is an attribute in my biz..we don't need the margin the big chain's require. The astute shopper will choose quality and service every time over slick advertising.

Same with you, you provide superior work at a fair price. Bryan does the same in his biz. Many of our members are specialists in their field.

Point being, most of the time, when all is said and done...we make our own luck in this world.

Yes, that is correct.
I believe do more than people expect.
It really does not cost much and the customers are very happy.
I do not advertise, I have not in 20 years.
Right now, I am booked through April.
I am a very lucky guy and I never forget that.
Scotty, that is one awesome boat.
I may have stayed more that a couple of days knowing that baby was there :).
She is a beauty for sure.
Glad it worked out for you.

Bryan, thanks so much bud. We all think alike here... its amazing folks are folks no matter where you go.

The Big Picture. Those that get it, get it. Unfortunately many don't. They blame others for their troubles, bad luck, etc.

You're busy and booked for a reason. Guys, in general, those that aren't busy and can do it first thing in the morning....

Beware.

Here are a couple pics I took about a year ago:

(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/CIMG1067.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/CIMG1067.jpg.html)

(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/CIMG1068.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/CIMG1068.jpg.html)

Here's an early Hatteras catalog/promo photo that should look familiar - that could be Scott's dad on the bridge - with little Scotty asleep in the cabin dreaming of King Mackerel:  :sunny:
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j7/GoneFission/HistoryMAIN_large01_large_zps108350ce.jpg) (http://s76.photobucket.com/user/GoneFission/media/HistoryMAIN_large01_large_zps108350ce.jpg.html)

She's a classic Hatt - those 60s Hatteras are built tough and strong.  Willis Slane, who founded the company, used to display a big Hatt (even his own 41 footer "Knit Wits") at boat shows supported by a single block under the keel - no other boat could do that!  It demonstrated the strength of the Hatteras hull.  :salut:  The first commercial Hatteras boats were built in 1960, with the company offering several models starting in '62.  These early Hatts were the first all-fiberglass motor yachts and set the standards for those to come.

Sadly, Brunswick bought Hatteras in the 90s and Dusty McCoy and company pretty much sucked the money out of the company.  Brunswick sold its Hatteras and Cabo brands to Versa Capital Management LLC affiliate Navis HCY Acquisition LLC in August of this year (2013).  Hatteras and Cabo are expected to stay in North Carolina and John Ward will continue to lead them.  John Ward seems to be a good guy, and we all hope Hatteras will return to it's position of leadership.  Hatteras' bread and butter for years has been 50 foot sport fishing boats, but that market has pretty much been taken over by large center console boats.  It will be interesting to see what happens with the Hatteras line.  The 90 footers actually are still selling...

Scott's boat would be a great lake boat or near-shore boat, but she might be hard to sell today with big-block gas engines - it seems everyone wants diesels...  :x   Now what if you put a couple used Cummins 6BTs from Dodge pickups in there?

Maybe we should start another thread on Scott's Hatteras...   :thumleft:

Great post CJ, also interesting the latest developments with the company....thanks a bunch :thumright:

Thanks guys, good idea to start a new thread. We're gonna move it at the end of the month. My new partner has a lowboy set up for yacht transport, and a Freightliner. So will be sure to post some pics of the move, and all of the finish work etc.

More neat news. He had bought at auction another 34 someone had chopped up to turn into an express, but it never happened. So he has a bare hull...plus a shipping container full of original parts....mahogany trim, galley fixtures, head, lighting, etc.

Really happy with the turn of events, and like the new partner too :thumright:
