Tachometer issues
« on: May 23, 2020, 04:18:58 PM »
So I aquired a 2000 225 explorer tournament with 2000 Johnson 225 on it. Slowly working the bugs out of it as it had been rode hard and put away wet for a good portion of its life. To date I have resurfaced the heads that were warped due to overheating, replaced head gaskets, t-stats, t-stat covers, water pump and housing, removed a bunch of crappy wiring and determined it needs new fresh and raw water pumps.
Put it in water other day for first sea trial since I've owned it. After a few minutes it ended up running pretty good. I could only get about 30 mph out of it, and it sounded like it wasn't getting full high rpms. When I looked into the rpm situation, I found that tach wouldn't read past 3100. Back at home I discovered the carbs weren't getting the last 1/4" of travel. I adjusted cable so I'm hoping that solves the full RPMs issue. Could the tach just be bad? It seems to be accurate from idle to 3100.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you changed the setting on the tach? Maybe the tach was changed. Check that.  Look up the tach setting online, it may be set to the wrong position.

Thank you for the reply. It appears to be the original Teleflex tach. It has the dial on the back that can be set for different applications. Seems to be set correctly on the "6P" position.
