Greetings from Florida!!
« on: February 23, 2010, 06:57:19 AM »
The wife, mutts and I went out for a nice outing on Sunday.  It was clear, breezy and about 70 degrees.  Beautiful.
I just wanted to say hi to all of our northern borthers and sisters on the forum.  And to let them know what they are missing up there.
We fished the Manatee River and caught our limit of ladyfish!  It was a great day either way.

Ah, the river...used to wade off of Desoto Memorial at the end of 75th st.  And you're right about the damned ladyfish!  Fun for about 10 minutes 'til you wish they went away and let you get your shrimp to some real fish!  Caught a lot of permit and trout, but I liked upper Sarasota bay for reds and snook...

I miss those days down there... :(

I didn't do any wade fishing.  The water was in the high sixties.  Far too chilly for me.     I like Sarasota for trout and the like.  But when I want to catch reds I head further up river near Ft. Hamer and let the misses catch our limit.  8)

You know as well as I, in the winter, you can get some great reds and snook all the way back to the dam at Lake Manatee.  Isn't that something like 18 miles from the mouth?

Yep, it is a drive to get from the mouth to the dam.  I have never gone all the way to the dam by boat.  But I traveled 39 miles and never left the river.  If anyone wants to know where to go fishing up on the river let me know.  I have a few spots that regularly produce.

Feel free to PM me some spots.  They would not be spread around.  I launched at Ft. Hamer a couple of times last winter but found nothing but a school of jacks but I only went maybe 1/2 mile past Mill Creek.  Saw a few baby tarpon up one creek but as usual they would not bite.
