17 Rebuild and question
« on: September 13, 2009, 01:55:18 PM »
I finally started my 17 rebuild this weekend.  The transom cap is cracked pretty good so I am starting on that.  I think I made my inners skin cut to far from the transom though.  I can't seem to get it broke loose.  Does anyone have any tips?  I broke the floor loose from the stringers and the core is pretty much delaminated but I still can't get the thing out of there.   Here are some pics.  The fuel tank is the original and dated 1987.  I am going to replace it even though it isn't currently leaking.

Does anyone know what the hose under the main fuel fill hose is for?  It isn't attached to anything.  I almost suspect it is to keep the main fill line off of the fiberglass so it doesn't rub.

It was rotted pretty good up by the cap, but solid where the engine mounts

I have it loosened up pretty good at the stringers and the transom but I just can't seem to get it pried the rest of the way out.

A reciprocating saw is a wonderful thing.  Unless you are trying to save the skin to re-use just cut it into smaller pieces and start prying.  It will come out.

Scroll down to see how I got mine out, I had to cut out sections in both sides to get the whole thing out. Took forever and was a pain in the butt.

Thanks guys.  Yes there is still some wood in the transom.  I used a chainsaw to get most of it out but ther is still a fair amount towards the bottom.  However, I think I pried most of it apart.  Antibling, I think I am going to need to do what you did because I am starting to think it is bonded really solidly in the corners.  I really wish I would have made my cut closer to the transom because I cant get the prybar under the drip tray for real goo leverage.

Aqua I will send you my email address.  Thanks.
