About to route a new transducer in my 2001 215 Explorer
« on: October 30, 2020, 01:10:35 AM »
Hi everyone, noob here! I just bought my 215 Explorer and want to route a new transducer cable to replace the old one. I've already been told to use the old one's cable to pull the new one thru to the helm but, how difficult is it? Since the inner liner doesn't allow for much access are there any snags to watch out for?  Any suggestions to make the job easier or should I leave it to a professional? Thanks for the help!

All wires/cables from the helm to the aft goes through a pipe along the starboard chine. The pipe can be full and if anyone ran any new wiring it can be a mess.  You can see the path of the cables if you remove the bulkhead cover in the cabin and shine a light into the abyss that is the gap along each side of the liner. You have the gap along port and starboard side of the cabin.
That being said, you can use a snake to pull a few pull lines from front to rear disregarding the pipe and then can pull new "whatever you want" to the aft or from the aft.

Thanks Rickk! That's what I was thinking, that it was a pipe. I'll take a look at the pipe and gap and see which route they took with the old transducer and see if that will help.

The pipe is not full length, about 1/3 best I could tell. It's easiest to fish a couple pull lines and pull the new wire, letting it rest on top of the pipe.

Thanks again! Can't wait to try it, the boat's at the shop undergoing some unexpected trailer repairs so I have to wait until I get it back.

Update:

It was easier than I thought, after removing both the rod holder and cupholder inserts had access to most of the right side of the hull. The pipe was full of the control cables and other wiring so I just routed it alongside the pipe to the front. After the new engine was installed the thick engine control cables were removed so they routed the transducer cable thru the pipe.
