Power a 1980 170 with a 2015 Merc 60Hp 4 Stroke
« on: February 13, 2023, 12:04:09 AM »
Hi all,

I picked up a 1980 170 and I have a 2016 Mercury 60HP 4 stroke that I was thinking about putting on the 170. The weight is great, 247lbs, but I am a bit unsure about it being under powered and taxing the engine.

Has anyone repowered with a 60HP 4 stroke and if so how did it do?

The 170 will mainly stay in the intercoastal and occasionally run out to some islands 3 miles off the West Coast of FL. I have a '76 22'2" that I will use more but I had a '72 170 a few years back and couldn't pass this guy up. You know how it is....lol

Thanks in advance

I think it'll be way underpowered and you won't be happy.

My 86 170 came with a 60hp Johnson. Have no idea how it would have run because I opted to upsize to a 115hp.

That was a long time ago and motors have changed but a little more hp wouldn't hurt.
