170 renovations 78'
« on: April 06, 2019, 08:30:51 AM »
Picked this 170 up a few weeks ago, didn't care much about the condition because I figured it would be getting redone anyway. Transom top has been "drilled and filled" in the past, but now has a crack along the outer skin. There's also a soft spot behind the fuel tank hatch to the stern.
We started stripping all the rails and hardware off, all rigging is gone, and getting ready to see how we'll get her to float with a jackplate and small 90 2 stroke on it.

Mike when you take pics with your cell phone turn the phone so it is horizontal with the camera to the left, then they'll show up correctly here.  Also, instead of attaching the pics, use your free gallery here (upload to "member gallery") - follow these instructions
http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12725.0

Attachments are size limited but when you upload the pics to your gallery there is no size limit.

Thanks Rick
I have a bunch downloaded in my gallery, but still trying to figure out how to navigate this site with iOS. I guess I'll have to retake some current pics with the camera horizontal.

Motor and jackplate are installed (well bolted on) and maybe I'll get a chance to splash it tomorrow afternoon to see how it sits and play with the COG.

If they are in your gallery they can be turned using the tools in the gallery. I can't help you with iOS unfortunately.

I rotated all the pics in your gallery. There are tools to the right when you look at a picture - one is "edit picture". Click that and there are rotate and other tools available.  Once you rotate CW, for example, you must click "submit changes" at the bottom left or the rotate will not take place.

Now if you want to add more pics in your posts, follow the instructions in the link I provided earlier.

Started messing with console, trying to keep it as simple as can be.

New wheel will be smaller, can sit on the cooler and still have plenty of visibility.

Gives you a great model for how to build the addition.

With a little more fitting, I'm in hopes it can become the mold.
Doesn't look like I'll get to see how it floats, 7" of snow forecasted, it'll have to wait until after vacation.

Finally got some decent weather to see how she'll float with the 12" jackplate on it. I put 110 lbs on top of the fuel area, 77 lbs for 1/2 tank of fuel and 33 for hydro pump and rigging, then started with 1 starting battery. That's where it sits, about 1" above the bottom of the scuppers.

Added 2 house batteries and it went down to 1/2".

Then conveniently added 240 (or so) lbs to the stern and it was at 3 1/2"-4" above the bottom of scuppers.

I don't think that's too bad from what I've been reading on here. I plan on putting a 25" transom in and replacing the floor ( soft spot aft deck) so the scuppers can certainly be raised a few inches. Add A few  pig pong balls and hopefully it'll be okay.

Been juggling around a few ideas about this rebuild. Transom isn't in as bad shape as I thought so I'm going to do a quick repair and run it all summer the way it is. I'll throw a 5" jackplate on it to see how I like it.

Fuel tank
As I was cleaning up the boat, I decided to remove the foam from the top of the fuel tank and check all the hoses. Slight hint of gas odor from around the filler and vent, hoping no big deal since they'll be replaced. Of course the foam has some moisture in it down along the tank, IS it best to remove the foam or will a few well placed holes help with draining?? The tank was stored full of fuel and was only drained last year, visual inspection didn't look bad for the original tank, so I'd like not to mess with it now (plan on rebuild this winter).

Is it an aluminum tank? I think in '78 they still used aluminum.  If there was foam against the tank, that's not a good thing and causes pitting that will eventually cause leakage.

But of course it's aluminum  :embar: and its foamed all around! What's the best wa to test it for leaks? Maybe a pressure gauge? A few lbs of air would certainly find any potential leaks The top doesn't look bad if thats any indication of the rest of it.

The only way to know for sure is to pull the tank and look it over.

Unfortunately a foamed in tank is not a good thing.  The factory did not foam them in.  Foam will hold moisture against the tank and over time cause pitting.  There should be a data plate on the tank with the date of build capacity etc.  Personally I'd dig that sucker out.
