1984 Aquasport 222 WT Sandpiper
« on: July 26, 2013, 09:46:04 AM »
I just purchased a 1984 222WT Sandpiper, one of the previous owners has plugged up the rear side drains for the floor drains and has taked the drain hose's and put them into the live well to drain. I want to redo the drains to drain overboard, what is the best way to gain access to the hose and fittings? i would like to replace with all new if possible.

Thanks

A photo of the stern/transom area would help.

Here is an 84 SP I found. Does yours look similar?

If so, it appears that the teak areas in the stern are hinged and lift up for storage. I'll assume you have looked down these openings. There may be removable inserts (that might be one sitting on the deck, port side) if you can't see down to the drain connections and thru hulls. It looks like the stern cleat fasteners are attached via that access. Lastly, you may need to add a deck plate to each side for access. Just thoughts.

This is a view of a  84 CCP deck/thru hull hook up. Yours would be similar I would guess, since both models share the same hull.

Good luck.

That can be a hard area to get to - unless you have 4 foot long arms!  You are right - the deck drains should drain out the side, not into the livewell.  Most folks actually close the valve on the livewell and keep it dry.

Does your boat have the teak covering boards on the top on each side of the transom?  If so, you can probably take them off and reach down to access the fittings - it's a long reach...  But remember, someone had to get in there to disconnect them - so look to see how they got in and do the same.

Good luck!

Yes my stern looks the same, I looked into the two storage areas on each side and at the bottom is a 6" access port. I am gonna try and access from there if not  i am gonna make access portals on each side and then cover them. Do you know how the livewell drained? Did it go to one of the side drains or did it use a separate discharge area?

Thanks
Kevin

Kevin,
I don't know. Let me ask this. Where is the well located on your SP? Also, are there any other thru hulls located (besides the 3 in the stern) forward? I say 3 in the stern, assuming one each close to the water line (for deck drainage) and a third higher up on the starboard side for the bilge discharge.

The best way to tackle this is to install access hatches on the verticle sections near the deck.  Look at the picture of the 200 CCP that I used to have.  The 222 Sandpipper has the same design at the back.  Where the fishing pole is on the starboard side is where you want the hatches but down near the deck.  That will give you all the access you need to replace everything if you choose to.  I would strongly suggest replacing the scuppers and hoses.

That is how the guy that bought my 200 CCP gained access.  He was able to replace the hose and the scuppers.

We have a member (Whitewater) with this year hull. It is (was) for sale. That is the pic I used. He last visited on 23 July so hopefully he will drop in and add insight to your situation.

Where are you located Kevin?

It has the three drains in the stern, two floor drains, one for bilge. I was wondering if there was a tee fitting used to drain through the scuppers for the livewell. There is a drain forward for the sink, they cut that and have another hose going to that drain overboard, I was thinking there is a bilge pump forward, but not sure. May be a winter project to take up the floor boards. He also put the gas fill in the floor through a access port, I am going to reconnect the side fill also, not sure why they disconnected this also.

I am in Maryland, close to Delaware.

Kevin I sent you a PM a couple a weeks ago. I have everything set up right in mine with the exception of the raw water wash down and the live well fill (both run off one source with T fittings and ball check valves) . If you need any pictures or advice on how to bring this situation back to original, give me a shout. I gave you my email address in the PM as well

It's a great boat and she flies with a 200 on her if you got that same motor as mine.
