Question about resin
« on: September 09, 2014, 07:43:21 PM »
I've bought all my resin from uscomposites to date there epoxy kits at 2:1.  A new local supplier opened and I just purchased 5 gallons of epoxy from him with 2.5 gallons of hardener.   Told him what I was working on and he also does fiberglass.  The part b or hardner looks and seems totally different.  So wanted to ask you guys if you know anything or have used it. It says non corrosive.  Thank you in advance for any help.

Fiberglass Coatings (FGCI) is located in St. Pete.  http://www.fgci.com/   They are a reputable manufacturer and supplier.  I'd just give them a call and ask them.  The biggest question for epoxy I would ask is if it has amine blush when it cures.

That's what I've heard.  I'm getting used to it but it's also the only resin I've ever worked with.  And I'm really hoping that's the last 5 gallon kit I have to buy cause this stuff isn't cheap at all.  But get a couple more supplies and I'll be good to go full bore and finish this boat up.   Then hopefully I'll be able to be sitting on the water someone checking everyone else's rebuild threads out lol.

IMO epoxy is not as predictable, hardening time-wise, as poly.  With poly you know you have about 20 min max working time in our area of the nation.  With slow speed epoxy it really depends on the temperature I think. I've seen it take over a day to kick, in the fall here. And I've also had a bucket of it kick in what seems like 10 min when I was using it from the bucket while in the tank area of my hull.
But when it does....... it's a nice bond.
That brand doesn't say the speed on it, does it? The US composites brand says on the hardener label.
Where'd you buy this, Fiberlay?

Yes I know what you mean with time before kick off usually with the 2:1 ratio I have about a half hour of working time.  But I also never try to work with it in the middle of the day in this heat.  But there is a new fiberglass supply company that just opened in nokomis here called pro marine and the guy said he would match what I was paying at us composites and I save shipping.   But nice shop and seem to have everything in there so we will see how it works out.

Sweet - Fiberlay is like twice the cost for Epoxy.
Where in Nokomis?  I may need another gallon kit.
