My "new" 1979 Aquasport is here--picked her up today. :D   Once I get her registered, I'm going for a ride.  Engine is a 2001 75hp Merc.  This is fourth boat I've owned--the others were two aluminum skiffs (one was a duck boat) and a 1989 McKee Craft 16'.  I'l be using her for inshore fishing in Long Island Sound. Right now it's gusting 25 kts or so, but once the wind dies down a bit, I can look for stripers later this week :D

I'm already looking for a part- want to get a windshield I can see through.









 

   

Feels like my first serious boat--been fishing with other guys or out of my skiff for years.  Ah, life is good!

Looks like she still has the original rub rail. Nice looking boat.

Thanks guys and thanks John for the link.  My kid Tommy is really psyched to go fishing.  We still have some season left here, although I have to be out of my slip at the Town Dock on 11/1.  The ramp's maybe a mile from my house.

I had a boat with a smoked windshield, not as dark as that.  I hated it.  Can't see at all in low visibility or at night.

Nice looking 17', I'm sure you'll enjoy it!!  Since I've picked up my project 17' quite a few people I have spoken with about it have had nothing but good things to say about boat.  Hope you get her in the water soon!!

Thanks MJB--  actually I was looking at all your pictures of your rebuild!  Neat to see what's inside the boat, and possibly I'll have to do the transom someday.  It's good and rigid at this point so I'm not going to mess with it.  I'd be interested to know what the signs of a wet transom are, however.

I had long cracks on the top of the transom where the liner and hull were joined originally which undoubtably let water in.  Also quite a few drilled holes in the transom for who know's what -- my guess was an old swim platform, splash board, and probably a transducer -- the holes were filled in with a silicone sealant, not exactly the best material.  Also did not have original motor, so had additional holes drilled through.  Needless to say it was in sad shape.

Couple ways to check the transom: 1) visually inspect (mine was a sure tell, otherwise this is not exactly reliable), 2) shake/step/bounce on one of the fins of the lower unit and see how much the transom gives -- if any, 3) you might see some brown water seeping out of a hole or previously filled hole (saw that in my other boat in the bilge), 4) you might see where the motor is bolted and see stress cracks around the bolt holes and possibly start to compress in and around the bolt washers/nut, 5) you could even drill a couple small test holes in the lower portion of the transom and see if you got any of the brown water seeping out (I'd only do this if I was really sure I had a problem, or I had a good plan to fill the hole with some resin/filler).  

Depending upon how much you were going to invest in a boat, a Marine Surveyor would probably be a good idea and money well spent.  

Mine was a project from the beginning and likely in much worse condition than your's could be in -- enjoy it!!!

Wow, Thanks Mike-- this board is so amazingly helpful.  Just got the boat and I can find out what to look for from someone who has been there, much appreciated :D

My PM ended up in the out box, not the send box--I must have neglected to push a button!

Think I'll perform the tests you mention just to see what happens.
