Transom replacement questions

Transom replacement on 19-6:

Going to mount 4" setback jackplate, going to stick with close to factory profile (maybe narrow the motor "dip" down a hair, but sticking with factory height overall, not fully enclosing, etc.)

Price given was for vinyl ester, (2) layers of 3/4" Coosa 26, cut out from outside, I de-rig, re-rig...$2,000

Price fair?  Guy does excellent work, has plenty of references both provided by him and self-testimony on local fishing forums, etc...haven't found anyone to have a complaint.

Vinyl ester fine?

Cut out from the outside I know was previously recommended against, but he said tying it back in isn't a concern...cutting up and piecing back the deck (with drain trough) would be a larger concern of his...Valid point?

What do I do about the HIN?

Any other tips, cautionary advice, etc. before I commit?

Can't really give much advise on the transom seeing that I haven't done one yet, sounds like he has done it this way before, so I would want to see pics and talk to other owners who he has done this for and check their perspective of his work after a year or two..
The hull id # you can probably do what I had to do...had a engraving shop make me a plate out of stainless with the HIN on it and thru bolted it to the transom..it has passed Coast Guard inspection every year since(3)..
Plan on adding a jack plate to mine sometime this year as well..who's are you going to use? Been looking at Boob's marine and  a few others, non hydraulic..

Have an older Bob's hydraulic in the garage...probably have new hydraulic lines made (previous install had everything closer to the transom than it will be this go-round), otherwise should be good to go.

If he's good as referenced, price is plenty fair.

Edit: And if he's good...can stamp in the original location HIN on the new glass/gelcoat per your direction.

   You're not kiddin!  clean and ready for reassembly it seems? Using epoxy I assume, or are  you sticking with Poly/Vinyl?   Please take lotsa photos of this one.  I am COMPLETELY at a loss as to how he's going to reattach that outter skin without having to blend/fair into the hull sides and bottom which then requires signficant re-paint/gel work.       I've done my share of small glass repairs over the years, and even repaired/raised my transom on the wellcraft, but I'm by no means a pro, so I look forward to learning something new.  

btw - not sure if congrats or condolances are in order re: your 290, but either way I feel ya!

I would recommend you have him get rid of the trough and extend the floor to the transom. That will raise the scuppers an inch or two and help keep your feet dry.

I'm relying on him for pictures as I'm busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest, most of which is taking place an hour from his shop.

Yes on vinyl-ester.  Says its all in the prep.  I'm trusting everything at this point only because of the high dollar boats I've seen come and go for some extensive work, and the fact that in the internet age I've still not managed to find a cross word written about him or his work.

Time will tell, and if it all falls apart or looks like poo, I'll post that as well.

On the trough: I'm okay with that...but then do the lower mounting bolts for the motor just end up in the bilge?  Fiberglass down there looked right rough at the intersection of deck trough and inner skin of transom...didn't look like a happy place to try to tighten a bolt down without some serious grinding after tearing out the trough (which sounds expensive   )

Also, on the 290 Ryan, it's a little of both.  Sold quicker than I'd have guessed for right about what I was figuring it would go for, but at the same time, I'll miss her...was a fun boat for my uses, but MAN was it thirsty.

The bolts in the bilge and the raw fiberglass are no problem at all. I would also recommend you have him add a hatch there in the back so you can tighten said bolts and install a bilge pump.

I already cut in an 11x15 hatch there to get at the bilge pump and such.  Called and spoke to the guy doing the work and we'd already tentatively said we'll do the transom, run it for the summer, and then over the winter talk about digging in a little deeper (deck, beef up/dry out stringers, etc.), so he suggested we leave it as-is for the moment and then when the deck comes out, put it back where ever/however I'd like...and that's fine because we're already spending more on this than I'd like.

As for "how": Said he'll glass it around the corners, fair it, blend it in and all will be right with the world.

Bob's 6" jack plate... never been mounted on this boat... previous boat it was on I just installed it in existing motor holes in transom. This being a fresh transom, I get my choice.  Where should I bolt it height- wise?
