Title: bought a new boat
Post by: Aswaff400 on July 02, 2016, 07:12:57 PM
picked this boat up from a customer in my marina this week. got it for a steal! hull is a '91 fountain 31te, motors are 2005 250xs's with 114 hrs. overall, the boat is in really good condition, motors need a little work from sitting for a "few" years but overall shouldn't require much work to get them running again. not a fan of the color scheme but it was a deal i couldnt pass up. i put new batteries in and much to my surprise everything works :dance02: all lights, pumps and float switches, both gps and fishfinders, all lights, trimtabs, and both vhf and am/fm/cd radio work!

been working on the boat this week, got it fitted to my "new" trailer, and then started cleaning the fuel system. pulled the VST's, cleaned them, and one pump was found to be bad. pumped Sentry through the fuel rails. let everything soak. pulled the spark plugs and sprayed oil in the cylinders, reset the break-in oiling, and did a compression test, 135-140 psi on all 12 cyl. put the plugs back in, reinstalled the good now clean VST on the starboard motor, bled the fuel rails till i saw clean fuel from portable can with sentry mixed in. turned the key and she lit right off!!!! :danceSm: let it run for a half hour and shut it off. transfered the VST to the port motor, re-bled the fuel lines till clean fuel came out. cranked for a bit let it sit 15 minutes, then she fired off.

bought the boat mainly for the motors, the gold powerhead race motors, reviews ive seen on THT, say the top speed should be around 65-68 mph, and 2-2.5mpg between 30-40mph with these motors

no, but the deal couldnt have been passed up!

had the fuel tank cleaned and pumped out today. hardly any water(less than half a pint), and almost no debris, he said if thats the original tank, it apeared to be in VERY good condition, and/pr its been cleaned before. one step closer to being in the water!

took the boat out for the first time and she ran great! 45mph, burning less than 20 gph, turning 3800 rpm, WOT 64 mph

Yeah, the colors... Lol

Rick, she gets the same or better mileage than my flat back did with the old 225efi, I averaged 1.9 to 2.2 mpg on a tank, this thing gets 2.25 mpg at 45 mph, that's pretty good for a 31ft center console, and it gets twice the mileage of the 36 contender I use

Seems at cruise it gets around the same as my 230's 250 - and mine doesn't do 45 ;-)

ive been reading a bunch of posts on THT about the 31 fountains, everyone says the same thing, in a chop, they ride better at 40 mph than 30 mph and that proved true yesterday morning. at 30 mph it would kinda fall into the face of the next wave and pound vs at 40+ she's skipping across the tops of the waves and hardly ever pounded. only complaint was bilge access.

we have a possible keys trip planned for later this year with the boat, a friend of mine is running their 33 palmetto down, we may tag along

How's the forward cabin?  Just storage area?

theres just enough room for 2 people to sleep somewhat comfortable, and nice for extra dry storage space, theres also a porta potty under the center cushion in the cabin.

working on getting the boat dialed in, changed the spark plugs and tried a different set of props. boat came with a set of 25p Mirage's, which originally gave me a top speed of 64 mph turning 5250 rpm. tried a set of 23p Bravo One's after changing the plugs, 61 mph turning over 5900 and hitting the rev limiter when trimmed out with half fuel and full livewell on board. gonna put the 25's back on and see what i get with the new plugs.

well 2 weeks ago i started removing the stripes, sanded off pretty easily with 320 on a sander, followed by 600 on a sander, then a pretty abrasive compound on a high speed buffer.

had to replace both bilge pumps which was an absolute pain in the :*:!! removal of the livewell is the only way to get to the pumps. and i didnt like how everything was butt connected together, which appears to be original.

thanks rick. one thing i have been liking about this boat, for a 31 ft boat, it gets great mileage. better than my flatback with the old 225EFI
2.5 mpg at 36mph turning 2900 rpm
2 mpg at 48 mph, turning 3900 rpm

took the boat up to Suwannee for Scream and Fly run/bbq first weekend of march, squeezed out 69.9 mph out of the boat on the river. lots of really fast and nice boats.

Done a bunch of work to the boat, re did the dash, new garmin and radar, and tested some new props from mercury racing...

Before
(http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/recklesabandon727/1991%2031%20fountain/IMAG0322.jpg) (http://s10.photobucket.com/user/recklesabandon727/media/1991%2031%20fountain/IMAG0322.jpg.html)

new 26p Bravo One FS
135 gallons of fuel
rpm: 5800-5900 depending on trim
top speed: 72.5 mph
felt more stable at WOT/trimmed out, hit the rev limiters after trimming all the way out

I am definitely happy with how she runs, feels a little more stable at speed than she did with the mirage plus'... Went out today to get some numbers, amount of trim has a huge effect on mpg, trim was at 17% until 5500 rpm, then trimmed out to 30%

RPM--MPH--MPG
3000--32.4--2.73
3500--43.0--2.36
4000--49.7--1.80
4500--55.8--1.56
5000--62.0--1.35
5500--68.8--1.42**
5900--72.5--?.??**
**trimmed out

Added a Bob's double jack to the boat since I was maxed out on engine height, and allows me to run bigger props easier. The 26p Bravo 1 FS would hit the rev limiters pretty easily with less than a half tank of fuel. New top speed so far is 73.8 mph turning 28p Bravo 1 FS to 5750 rpm and was shooting for +75 mph at the scream and fly run with a lightened load. Ended up blowing up the clutch dog in one of my lower units first day of the trip, 35 miles down river from the boat ramp... :c002:

Video from the party, can see my boat at the 1 minute mark
